Another Jack Foster memory on the Pasty Cam 8 years ago today. That's the arch at Italian Hall, a frequent topic of conversation over the years here at Pasty Central.

I remember the day Jack drove up to Still Waters and invited me to hop in his car with the Sony Mavica, the camera we had been using since the Pasty Cam began. He drove me around downtown Calumet, up to Swedetown, out to Lakeview Cemetery, and everywhere we went he would say, "Take a shot of this... most people don't know that back in 1885 there were..." ...and he would go on to tell me fascinating stories from the Copper Country's past. Often I have remembered this and regretted I didn't have a recorder rolling. There is a sample of Jack's story-telling style, back in the archives, with the Italian Hall Disaster.

What became of the documentary about the Italian Hall Disaster? We met the guys producing it at the first Pasty Fest a couple years ago. I'll have to see if I can find the website.

By Susan Lahti (Finn_in_texas) on Thursday, April 27, 2006 - 08:24 am:

Thanks for sending that Japei. I'm sharing that with my daughters who were born and raised in Texas and have not been fortunate enough to even experience the UP. I do hope to pass on to them an understanding of their Finnish heritage. Just wish their grandpa was still here, to pass along his stories.

Deb, Know what you mean about little ones concerts my Precious is still having concerts and is having one on Sat. Even though she is LX plus she is still a trooper. My grandaughter Andrea is having an Irish dance concert the following weekend. Busy season coming up with concerts, sports events of the grandkids, and my reenacting of the French and Indian war. I enjoy being busy. Still no baby.

Marsha
this is the site I think you are looking for..http://www.1913massacre.com/

By Michael Du Long (Mikie) on Thursday, April 27, 2006 - 10:12 pm:

Well my pork came out beutiful and as I was transfering it to a platter I dropped it on the floor. What to do. Do you think I cleaned it up and served it any way? Do you think that I threw it away and made something else? Do you think that I am glad that the dog left with my son and his family? Do you think that I am starting to wonder if Jack will ever be born? I made an adorondix chair and foot stool today and made stocks for my daughters fifth grade class, plus made dinner, if I were on Lake Superior I wouldn't have accomplished any thing today as I would have been gazing at the lake and day dreaming. Oh, you lucky Copper Country residents.

By Deb S. (Usedtobeayooper) on Friday, April 28, 2006 - 07:35 am:

Well Mikie, What DID you do with your pork? You are a funny guy! I guess I thought you lived in the Copper Country. Whereabouts do you reside?

Well, I went to the grandchildren's concert last night! What a thrill watching the little darlings up on that stage. They both looked so cute as the little blonde hair, blue eyed girl and the little brown haired, brown eyed boy. What a contrast and simply adorable! Of course afterwards I had to tell them how proud I was of them and they were all smiles. Next week's Grandparent's Day at their school. Will have to divide our time between the two kids. How exciting! And of course they couldn't wait to call and ask us if we were coming! What a silly question. No job could keep us away.

By Michael Du Long (Mikie) on Friday, April 28, 2006 - 11:48 am:

Deb, I lived in Hubbell till I was twelve then my dad moved us to Royal Oak, by Detroit, I graduated from school in Royal Oak,and then went on to Michigan at Dearborn and went to work at Chrysler for forty years. During that time we lived in Germany and I married Precious, had three kids and seven grandkids soon to be eight if Jack ever makes up his mind to appear. My wife is a Metso soprano and is in several choirs and also is a Cantor with her church. I spend my time as the grandkids chaufer and working in my woodshop. I do the majority of the cooking, and since Precious doesn't go to this site, I will disclose what I did with the Pork. Oh doorbell got to go.

Michael DuLong (Mikie):
Which school did you graduate from in Royal Oak--Dondero or Kimball or perhaps one of the catholic schools. I graduated from Dondero. We moved to R.O. from Hubbell in 1965. They are closing Dondero and merging the 2 schools to Kimball but renaming it Royal Oak High School.

By Michael Du Long (Mikie) on Friday, April 28, 2006 - 04:21 pm:

I graduated from Dondero in 1961 an we still have a monthly reunion at the Roost in Madison Heights on the second Wed. of the month.

I was a '72 graduate. I've only seen one classmate in 30 some years.....

By Michael Du Long (Mikie) on Tuesday, May 2, 2006 - 06:45 pm:

There was a homecoming game last year and there were all kinds of alumni from all the grades. My brother John the annointed one, the gifted one, the super intelligent one, the all mighty wizard, with a doctorite, graduated in 1971 or so,this is the way he makes me refer to him. When I call the Ford Hospital and ask for him they wait till they here all of his title before I can talk to him. There is a site that you can go to comerical type that has the names and if you pay you can get in touch with alumni. Two of the people that I went to school with own restaurants in the area so that is where we meet. The Roost in Madison Heights and the other one is Larry Paynes on Woodward, the Irish one.

By Sdcferndale (Sdcferndale) on Wednesday, May 3, 2006 - 11:56 am:

Michael DuLong (Mikie):
Hummm, I'll have to look him up in my year books. I may know him but its been many years since graduation!
I think maybe what you're referring to is classmates.com. I've never registered but, in the Tribune there is suppose to be a get-together sometime, I believe, in June since this is Dondero's last class (as well as Kimball). I should drag the hubby to one of the events. And tell the "annointed one" we're all special in our own unique ways!

By Michael Du Long (Mikie) on Wednesday, May 3, 2006 - 03:23 pm:

My brother the great sage was born when my mother was forty two and hadthe rest of the family wrapped around his finger. Not only have we spoiled him but his wife and his daughters have kept up the family tradition of spoiling John.
