Good afternoon from Kalamazoo. Expecting snow later today. We'll see how much we get.

A 'HAPPY ST. UHRO'S DAY' to my fellow YOOPERS wherever you may be.

In a recent Esky Daily Press there was an article about sixth
graders in Bark River-Harris, the eastern U.P., the western U.P.
and the Keweenaw working on a list of the 7 best natural
wonders in the U.P. and the 7 best manmade wonders. Lake
Superior was at the top of one list and the Big Mac at the top of
the other. The article didn't list the others.

I think that idea is too good to be confined to sixth graders. I
got to thinking what I would put on that list, and I wonder what
others would do too. Here are some of my top choices for the
manmade list besides the Big Mac. I would put the Quincy Mine,
the old ore dock at Marquette and the one of the open pit iron
ore mines south of Negaunee on the list, and then you would
have to consider the lovely lift bridge between Houghton and
Hancock and the international bridge between the 2 Soos as
well. Thinking of the Soo, you have to add the Soo locks too.
If I could another, it might be the big ski jump at Iron mountain.

So what do you think? Am I all wet, or are those pretty good?

Good morning everyone...or should I say 'afternoon'? Pulled an all nighter working on paperwork, so I guess this really is my morning.
Charlie, I love the idea of the list. My favorite man man wonders would be: the Mighty Mac; the Soo Locks, because they are a engineering wonder; the log slide off of route 58; route 58, for its wonderful views of Lake Superior and Pictured Rocks; the lighthouses that dot the Lake Superior shoreline; and of course, the wonderful bridge that brings us all home...and to the home of Pasty Cam...the Portage Canal lift bridge :)

Charlotte, It looks like winter's last snow storm is headed our way tonight. You must have really been working on that snow dance, because the snow storm is covering quite a few states...yet weather.com says that we may only get an inch of snow. Weather.com, we laugh at you. Last storm like this, we got six wonderful inches :)

Cuddle up girls, you could be having wildfires and at this moment, a snow storm would be welcome.

Sur5er and Charlotte, would you mind taking all the snow in this next round? I have to travel right through the "projected" path early tomorrow for business and would rather not deal with white knuckle driving.
By the way thanks to all the contributors that update on their weather occasionally. I travel through the LP and adjoining states and it is often very helpful. Well, time to hitch up the team of llamas!

I think it was the Sept. 15 What's Up page where I found the tomato casserole recipe. My printer isn't working at work, so I e-mailed it home, where my printer also isn't working, but at least I've got it.

Margaret, I had just read about the wildfires in Texas, and was going to check in with you, to make sure you were safe and sound.
Llamamama, Please drive carefully. The really bad part of this storm is that it will be a mixture of rain and snow= lots of ice. Driving in that definately calls for 4WD, and driving in the right lane...and using the rumple strips on the shoulder for traction ;)
So are you going to a llama show...or is it breeding season? I saw a horse trailer in town yesterday, headed towards I-94.

Charles, it's been so long since I've been to the UP but here are some of my favorite spots, man made and God made....THE LAKE of course, the Soo Locks, could stay there all day long "watchin". The blueberry field near Grand Maris. The lighthouse near Munising on Grand Island,is it? Actually any lighthouse on any Great Lake. The one at Escanaba is cool. The springs over near southern pensula where you can pull your raft across and look down into fantisic clear water. Lightning over the Lake! My grandma and grandpa's house in Hubbell. Fort Wilkins, the little towns going up to the fort. I remember a small roadside waterfall some where in that area. The Mac too altho we've only been on it once years ago on our motorcycle. My, my so much to see and I WILL this summer so help me. But the best, next to the lake, are the people I've met on the pasty.net!!!

Sur5er, I've got the 4WD ready. Unfortunately, this travel is for my job which makes the money to support the llama habit.
But in answer; we are heading into the show season next month. Breeding season was last spring, gestation is 365 days! My little girl is expecting a cria 5/13! :->

A few more to contemplate, Bishop Baraga Shrine, Snow Thermometer, Stone Boat, Old Portage Swing Bridge, Copper Harbor itself (need SISU to live year round) Brockway Mtn Scenic Overlook and that little house off Hwy 41 that sits out in the Bay between L'anse and Baraga. Always wondred who built it that way. Anybody know??
Time to educate a few friends about St. Uhro's day and make them Finns for a day.

Happy St. Uhro's to the UP. Our 2nd anchor is up, our dingy cleaned and on deck and we will head out into the Atlantic tomorrow morning and start our trek north, finally have a decent weather window.

Llamamama, I hope you will post pics of the baby llama, in May. Wow, now that's what I call a very long pregnancy...and entire year ;)

Good evening from Mishawaka, IN. Sur5er, so far we've only had a dusting of snow. Llamamama, drive carefully. I'd take all the snow right here if I could.

OOOHHHH Randall, I too love that little house that sits out there between L'Anse and Baraga. I've always admired it every time we've gone by. Would love to know how and when it got there and who owns it. And let's not forget Pictured Rocks as a natural wonder. They are gorgeous and there are always the Porcupines as well. The Douglas-Houghton Falls have always thrilled me to no end and there's that Fort down Escanaba way that I just love also. Lake Superior and the Big Mac top my list also. And how 'bout Mackinac Island? Oh my the list is endless. All of the lighthouses are great! The one on 5 mile point road outside of Eagle River that has been turned into a B & B is marvelous! And how about the Tahquahmenon (sp?) Falls? What a country! Then there's the Shipwreck Museum at Whitefish Point! I have to stop before I get too carried away.

Top of Little Mountain, South of L'Anse
Wetmore Landing, West of Marquette,
Jasper Knob, Ishpeming
The Silver and Slate Rivers, way, way upstream (North of L'Anse)
Pt. Abbaye, and Big Eric's Crossing on the Huron
The Montreal River Falls
The frozen Groundwater Falls, cliffs at Red Ridge -don't forget the Redridge dams-even though the wooden one is now destroyed :(
Finally, for anyone lucky enough to be able to wander around in any of our area mines, beyond the normal tours-there are a wealth of man-made/God-made wonders!!

OK, one more-the little rock canyons downstream of the road on Owl Creek. Man, thank goodness for "preview". I've previewed and added to my list four times!

Marc, I agree. I previewed and added too. I forgot about the Redridge cliffs. Wonderful! The smokestack in Freda is a wonder too. There's always the covered road leading to that area too. The M-26 trip to Copper Harbor is a wonder to behold! I never get enough of it. The view is spectacular and if you take 5 mile point road you get even more. Oh could we go on or what? Oh yeah, there's the golf course in Copper Harbor too. I just love that place!

I forgot something, my husband marvels at Jilbert's ice cream. Oh maybe that was me. Whatever eh?

And don't forget a patch of ripe thimbleberries that nobody has touched yet.

Oh, i just thought of a great one!!!
Big Spring-Kitchitikipi, or something like that-east of Escanaba. That is definately a must-see in the UP, if you ask me.

How about the Hungarian falls behind Hubbell, been in love with that area all my life.

Yes, another good one. I used to live in Tamarack. I hunted up there and hiked around with the wife and kids all the time

Does anyone know of a good source of info on the "natural wall" near Lake Linden?

Yes,
Dr. Theodore J. Bornhorst's "Self-guided geological field trip to the Keweenaw Peninsula, Michigan", 1994, 1996. It will guide you there and explain the mineral composition and processes that created it. I think the authors are actually listed Theodore J. Bornhorst and William I. Rose, both Geology professors at MTU.

Basically, it is a layer of Jacobsville Sandstone that was folded by compressional forces generated by the Grenville Orogeny approximately 1.1 billion years ago. The surrounding layers were more easily weatherable and have long since disappeared. The wall is the vertical part of a fold (the side). I hope Dr. Bornhorst would approve-that was off the top of my head...

That house on the bay 'tween L'Anse and Baraga was owned by a cousin of mine, Norm Hiltunen. It was sold a few years ago to ??? That road used to be US41 over that old bridge. Norm passed away 3 years ago, I think.

Ken, Thanks for the info on the house. I've always thought it to be so cute sitting out there all by itself. I can't help but watch it the whole while I'm passing by it. Sorry about your cousin passing away. Anyway, now I know a little about it.
