With the snow still on the ground and the sun shining brightly, Lake Superior just calls you to her shores. Oh wait, maybe that's really Paco, Joyce Tormala's furry companion that I'm hearing. No matter, whoever is beckoning, the trip to the snowy banks of Gitche Gumee is a trip well worth it, especially this time of year. No crowds, no bugs, just you and the incredible blues of the water and the sky. See you on the shores!

To be there right now would be wonderful!

By WishingIWasInDaUP (Sur5er) on Friday, March 24, 2006 - 08:19 am:

I immediately recognized Joyce's dog, Paco, in the first picture, before reading Mary's post :) Wish I could join Paco, for a walk on the beach today ;)

My two golden retrivers were quite jealous when they saw the "yooper" dog having so much fun in the snow. They are anxious to get back to Bootjack in a few months---they love to swim. I doubt if they would take a dip in the lake right now---a bit chilly.

Wish I was there to get a deep breath of the fresh spring air, too. Kind of nice to have a thick fur coat like Paco, too. Just seeing the crust on the snow brings back the memories and that will have to do for a three more weeks. Thanks for the lovely photos.

Don't you just want to be along for the walk?

By Linda Ledford (Linda) on Friday, March 24, 2006 - 09:41 am:

That looks like one happy doggie!! I love the dog pictures. I suggest a week of pictures devoted to the lucky canines of the Keweenaw.

Paco's back! you lucky pup! wish Iowa could get half that much snow! Our pups didn't have much snow again this year to play in, our Scottish Terriers enjoy the rides on the snowmobiles and our Doberman likes it when we follow him!

Good pictures. The dog sure looks like he enjoys his surroundings...and I don't know anyone who wouldn't...it is beautiful summer or winter.

Hey Joyce......knew that was your picture as soon as I saw it.........I feel just like Paco...if this snow doesn't go I will be on the shores doing the same thing!!!!

Saw those Tormala boys in the paper.....

Beautiful winter scene as usual. It looks like that stretch of beach up from the old Calumet Waterworks looking Northeast. Can anyone verify or correct me on this?

David S. Joyce lives the Misery Bay/Agate Beach area in Toivola, so I would guess this picture was taken somewhere on the shoreline there.
Maybe looking towards Rockhouse Point?

Does that row of boulders denote that from here on it's Mine Mine Mine !!!

By Liz B (Lizidaho) on Friday, March 24, 2006 - 05:09 pm:

Agate Beach. The boulders line the boat ramp.
It's one of my favorite Fall get aways to walk that beach or sit and dream........

My dog prefers to be indoors even though she's part husky. She's spoiled I'm afraid, though she does love our 2 daily walks. But when she sees the driveway, she heads right for the door. Smart dog!

By J.T. Toivola (Joyce) on Friday, March 24, 2006 - 11:54 pm:

Thank you!
Yup,Agate Beach and Rockhouse Point it is. Earlier this day I was walking on the little spot of beach near the mouth of the Big Elm River when I suddenly sank to my calves. My boots were filling with soft muck as I struggled to pull out, muttering "Oh no! How am I gonna 'splain running home with bare tootsies?!"
When I finally yanked free and climbed to the bank,Paco's whine changed to a wag and we were good to go.
In the first picture I was in front of the ice bank, standing on the beach, fully aware that the sand isn't as stable as it is in summer, while she is delivering the sermon,"Have you learned NOTHING from the stress and strain you caused a mere 30 minutes ago?! GET OVER HERE!" Paco is 11 people-years old now,so I should respect the fact that she is too old to baby-sit. From now on I will practice what I preach;Always listen to your dog!

Rockhouse Point is an awesome place to visit .....the Zman and I went there last summer. We camped at Agate Beach. I just loved it had a great time. We are going to do it again this summer with our two dogs again!! They also had a great time. The house that use to be on Rockhouse Point was built by one of my friends grandfather. It was a beautiful day when we went there.
