The fallen snow can be likened to an artist's canvas here UP North. Guess you could say Mother Nature prepares the medium and her animal friends create the artwork, covering the untouched whiteness with the tracks they leave behind. Tim Bertsos and Greta Jones both captured a shot of several of those trails decorating the snow. But Greta also caught one of the culprits who left those trails while making their daily rounds.

Eight years ago today the Pasty Cam daily feature was born, and that first week featured a variety of photos ranging from local signs, people and even a passel of deer like the one pictured above. It's amazing that after all these years we can find fresh daily photos of the Upper Peninsula to share with you. The thanks for that goes to the many wonderful photographers that keep sending those pictures our way.

Today in the 'What'sUP' section, our webmaster Charlie Hopper begins a series of memories about the origins of the Pasty Cam. Be sure to check it out in the days ahead.

By Rowdy (Roudymi) on Wednesday, March 1, 2006 - 08:41 am:

I think Bambi and Thumper were strolling through the area in the first shot. Excuse me, picture.

I must have stumbled on Pasty Cam shortly after it began. While I still was in Illinois. I check it out almost every day. Scenes that hit "home" are put as screen savers. Once in a while I forward a picture to friends of the CC and ask them to guess where it is.
We have fun with that. Thank you.

Thank you for eight years of service to yoopers, ex-pat yoopers, and wannabe yoopers. Your site is an oasis of sanity in a crazy world. I may not comment often, but I visit you daily. Keep up the good work.

By Jane Hart (Yooperski) on Wednesday, March 1, 2006 - 09:13 am:

ditto - these pictures today really make me homesick. Someday, I will return!

Happy Birthday Indeed! As a newcomer to your site I cannot tell you how much I enjoy the pictures and the wonderful commentary. I have developed a long distance love affair with your communities and hope to one day be able to visit in person. I have really gotten a sense of the f area and your wonderful people. This site does more to promote your area than anything I have ever seen. I always check in first thing in the am and it brightens my day. And, I learn things too! Who knew about skunks as the harbingers of spring!? Thanks again. Wonderful job!

Ever since I discovered the Pasty.com Website it has become a morning ritual to check out life in the UP. I'm ever so grateful for the work you folks are doing. It keeps me in touch with my son and his family up there. He inherited his love for the UP from me I'm sure.

By Eddyfitz (Eddyfitz) on Wednesday, March 1, 2006 - 10:10 am:

Congratulations on your first years on the internet and am looking forward to being able to view the great scenes daily.

By John Preisler (Jpreisler) on Wednesday, March 1, 2006 - 10:20 am:

By WishingIWasInDaUP (Sur5er) on Wednesday, March 1, 2006 - 10:20 am:

Happy Birthday to Pasty Cam :) Thank you for brightening my days. This wonderful website makes the wait until we visit and eventually move to the UP, a bit more bearable.

By Tim Bertsos (Timb) on Wednesday, March 1, 2006 - 12:37 pm:

Happy Birthday, and thanks for giving us a place where genuinely good and talented people can show their photos and look at other great photos, for no other reward than to enjoy them and talk about them. And I have to admit that it is still a little exciting to have your own photograph be the "picture of the day." Thanks again.

By jim lu maye (Jimlu) on Wednesday, March 1, 2006 - 02:57 pm:

Happy Birthday, just a super site brings back a lot of memories when I travled the U.P. for work. Keep it up.

By Kate Cuneo (Raventroll) on Wednesday, March 1, 2006 - 03:03 pm:

Happy Anniversary Pasty Picture People! Thanks for giving me the UP every day.

Though I'd still like more pictures of the Big Girl having a temper tantrum. Love them storms and the huge waves.

By eugenia r. thompson (Ert) on Wednesday, March 1, 2006 - 04:39 pm:

There are actually two, if not three, deer in the third picture.

By dave sou (Davesou) on Wednesday, March 1, 2006 - 05:39 pm:

Happy Birthday Pasty Cam and thanks to Charlie and everyone! Once again I find myself a long way from home for a very long time and this site and the people who populate it are to special for words...

By Deb S. (Usedtobeayooper) on Wednesday, March 1, 2006 - 06:23 pm:

Davesou, I'm with you. I tell my husband that every year when he goes hunting. I could NEVER shoot one of these creatures. They're gorgeous! I know, I know, they'd dent our cars if there were too many but they are beautiful!

By Donald R. Chevalier (Downstatedon) on Wednesday, March 1, 2006 - 06:42 pm:

Happy Birthday...Thank You Charlie and thank you
Mary Drew for all your hard work at keeping this
sight going. Hope to see you over the summer at
the restaurant.

By Jack K (Jackinct) on Wednesday, March 1, 2006 - 06:43 pm:

Happy Birthday Pasty Cam.
I know I've enjoyed it almost every day since I discovered it a few years ago.
It is an oasis in the desert of my surroundings here in Connecticut.

By Charlotte, Mishawaka, IN (Charlotte61) on Wednesday, March 1, 2006 - 08:35 pm:

From Mishawaka, IN Happy Birthday to Pasty Cam. Thanks to Charlie, Mary and all the others who keep this great site on the internet. I found this site about 3 years ago. I love the pictures, postings from others and hardly miss a day visiting. I know that some day I will get to see this beautiful area in person. I know I won't be disappointed.

Repost from yesterday:

To whomever sent me an email yesterday (Feb. 28th) with username and password trouble for login and posting a message on these pages, please email me again. I somehow lost your email, (darn that delete button!) and didn't get a chance to fix things up for you.

By Tim Hull (Hvilletim) on Wednesday, March 1, 2006 - 11:22 pm:

Happy Anniversary! I've told a number of my Chicagoland friends about your site and they now know two things: 1) The land and people living in the U.P. are great, 2) All the crazy stories and tales I tell about when and where I grew up are TRUE!

By dlp (Babyseal) on Thursday, March 2, 2006 - 10:54 am:

Seismic Pirate, Where did they send ya now? Someplace where you can thaw out?
