Kevin Dunham was recently on the shores of Lake Superior, when he witnessed a dramatic event between a Seagull and a Frog (who Kevin immediately named, Kermit). Of course Kevin had his camera at the ready and he snapped a succession of photos as the drama unfolded. The Seagull began by thinking it would have frog legs for lunch, as it flew over the waves of Superior, but the wind swiped the frog right out of the seagull’s grasp. The Seagull wasn’t giving up so easily though and it twisted enough to grab Kermit in mid air again. To no avail, though, as Kermit got loose once more and did a nose dive to the safety of the Big Lake. Kevin figures it was Kermit’s lucky day – Kermit 1 – Seagull 0. I love a happy ending!

Never Ending Shoreline gives us a look at what Kermit may have seen when he plunged into Lake Superior. Only this Superior snorkeling took place at Brunette Park, outside of Gay, MI, in Keweenaw County. The lead-in says: “Brunette Park In the Keweenaw Peninsula, see if you can spot the fish, I almost swam right past it, found a bit of debris from what I assume came from old shipwrecks that made its way near shore. Lake Superior is the largest freshwater lake in the world by surface area and the third-largest freshwater lake by volume, holding 10% of the world's surface fresh water. All footage Shot on a DJI Osmo Action 4, Manual WB, D-log color.”

Omgosh! These gave me such a chuckle. Nice job
Kevin and Mary. These were great!

Holy cow, poor Kermit! Bet that Gull snatched
him from a wetland near the shore. Even though
he took a dive into Lake Superior, the open
waters don’t make good frog habitat. And if he
makes it back to shore, he could be easy
pickings for the Gulls once again :(

Mother Nature being a little rough!

Kermit has a LONG swim home. Hopefully he's still in shape to make it OK.

I once was the "above water safety spotter" when a friend was making a scuba dive to obtain some sort of deep dive qualification. If memory serves, we were near Great Sand Bay. He of course had a dive buddy. They were planning to go down over 100 feet. I had no way of knowing as things unfolded that one of them experienced serious trouble. His air regulator froze and quit working. They had to share the remaining air source on the way back up. It took far longer than their schedule. No cell phones back then or would I have called the Sheriff. They returned successfully but were very worn out.

One of them had a single stage air regulator while the other a dual stage.

Hi
D.A., thank God your friend did have a dive buddy.
Yikes.

Have you ever read "A Superior Death" by Nevada Barr?
It is a murder mystery set in Isle Royale National
Park; diving figures prominently in the plot.

By Deb S. (Usedtobeayooper) on Thursday, October 29, 2026 - 10:39 pm:

Hi Kathryn, thanks for the info in that book. I'll
be looking for that. I've read a lot of Lake
Superior mysteries but I can't remember the author.
They took place in Minnesota and were very good.

DA, that had to be very scary. Superior is not
something to mess with. They were very lucky.

Nice pics and a great video of the bottom in the
big lake. So cold, no plant life or much of
anything else. I could never scuba dive or
snorkel, I always had difficulty the few times I
did it.

We had our boats out in that area many times,
being that Little Betsy isn't too far from there.
We would launch in Lac La Belle and blast down to
the cottage at LB, being Lake Superior, we never
kept the boats in front of the cottage. If a storm
kicked up, you were at the mercy pretty much
before we could attempt a trip back to the marina
in LLB. Always had to respect the big lake, it's
pretty easy to get into a situation that you don't
want to be in. We would take a couple boats or a
boat and jet skis out of LLB and cruise out to
Keystone Bay and around Manitou Island as long as
the weather was perfect. lol. cruising around the
backside of Manitou, out in the big water and not
able to see land other than that side of the
island was quite spooky. Even fishing out there
with my uncles when I was a young kid was scary.
Getting caught out there in 4-6 ft swells was not
enjoyable to me, my uncles and dad would just keep
fishing, I always thought they were CRAZY!! LOL,
Many memories of being on the big lake.

Thanks for sharing the pics & video.

I’m going to assume
that the frog escaped
and gave the gull the
Frog finger, if it had
any fingers left.
The video reminds
of diving off of the
coral reefs in the
Pacific, but without
the sharks.

Kathyrn,
I've heard of that book but I have not read it.
I did not know about the scuba diving link.
