We join Debbie Jarve for a look at another waterfall, this one in Baraga County, along US-41 about 15 miles south of L’Anse. Canyon Falls is often referred to as the Grand Canyon of Michigan, due to the gorge that widens to a mile wide and 300 feet deep further downstream from the falls. Debbie found some beautiful color both at the park when you first pull into the parking lot and all along the mile long trail skirting the Sturgeon River. The day last week that Debbie was there, the falls were looking much drier than they normally are, but again, we’ve had some rain since and hopefully that has restored it to a more normal amount of water flowing there.

Debbie recorded a video also, showing the water flowing over the falls and some of the color upstream from where she was standing. And as always, make sure you have your speakers turned UP to hear the sounds of the falls, too, you might just feel like you’re standing right there with Debbie.

Speaking of the Sturgeon River ... on this date in 1931 (from Boatnerd.com)

CHARLES H. BRADLEY (wooden propeller; 201 feet; 804 gross tons; built in 1890 at West Bay City, MI) was carrying pulpwood and towing the barge GRAMPIAN. She was traversing the Portage Canal in the Keweenaw Peninsula when she ran onto a bar and stranded. The barge kept coming and plowed into her stern. The BRADLEY caught fire and burned to the waterline. The wreck still lies in 6–17 feet of water just off the mouth of the Sturgeon River.

Awesome pics, interesting info on the boat!!

I couldn't figure how the Sturgeon connected to the Portage Canal, so found this:

Hi
I was talking with a friend of mine who just got back
from her vacation place near Munising. She said that
the colors were good, though some leaves had fallen.
She also mentioned a side trip to Canyon Falls and the
beautiful colors there.

Jonofmi, ships and their towed vessels figure in a book
I have titled "Great Lakes Shipwrecks and Survivals".
It seems like there would be all sorts of possible
problems with that set-up.

Even with a reduced flow, the falls are still
AMAZING! Such a fun place to explore, better
yet with the gorgeous colors bursting out!

We love stopping here. We haven't made it this
year. I heard the colors there are simply amazing.
These photos are beautiful and the falls there are
so awesome. Thanks for sharing them.
