Judy Byykkonen and friends headed out from the Hubbell Boat Launch recently for a new adventure, paddling their kayaks to the Quincy Mining Company, Dredge No. 2 and the stamp mill and smelting plant ruins across the road from the Dredge, all near the community of Mason. The ladies said it was a beautiful paddle and a perfect day with fun ladies. Judy mentioned that she believes it is trespassing if you go inside the Dredge, so the ladies didn’t paddle inside the sinking building. Years back before it was posted as no trespassing, we did paddle inside and it was very disorienting, as it feels like the water is flowing downhill, due to the tilt of the building as it is sinking. All in all, a fun adventure!

For a bit more boat action, but from much bigger boats, we join Nick and Andy Behling from MI Playground for freighter watching in Sault Ste. Marie. The lead-in says: “While freighter watching in Sault Ste. Marie, keep an eye out for the many different types of vessels that can be seen on the St. Marys River. Here are some of the other vessels that may be seen during a visit to Sault Ste. Marie.”

Looks like the ladies chose the perfect day for
their paddling expedition, with clear blue skies
and calm waters to start their morning. Appears
things got a bit more cloudy & breezy, but still
a beautiful day! Enjoyed photos of the historic
mining remains too.

the mining days, from the water! I don't believe
I've seen them like that before! Way cool! Judy has

The second shot was beautiful. But it wouldn't take a
"No Tresspassing" sign to keep me out of sinking
building; caution would do it.

Over Labor Day weekend some friends and I made a day
trip to the Soo and took the tour boat. It was good fun
and informative. We had a lot of ship traffic that day,
which our captain noted was not always the case. I even
saw the Sugar Island ferry when I got lost on the way
to the tour boat dock.
