If you’ve been out to the Schoolcraft Township Park on S. Big Traverse Road outside of Lake Linden, you may have noticed a new open air structure there with various size lifejackets hanging under the roof. This is “Jackets for Life”, donated there for visitors to “borrow” the lifejackets while they’re swimming at the Park, also known as Mink Farm and then return them to the structure when they’re leaving, so that others can use them, too. This has been put here as a gift to the park in honor of two young men, Matthew Wickstrom and Devin Wright, who drowned last year near Copper Harbor in a boating accident. In doing so, the families and friends of Matthew and Devin hope to prevent another drowning...such a generous and beautiful way to honor the lives of their loved ones. This day park is adjacent to the Campground nearby and is a great place to spend the day swimming, kayaking and playing at the playground there, which includes swings, a merry-go-round and a slide. There are picnic tables and pedestal fire pits to cook hot dogs and marshmallows. Parking is close by, so it’s perfect on a hot summer day.

Barbara also included a photo of her Beach House, with lights surrounding it, pointing out that the days are getting shorter and the lights come on by 9:00 – 9:30 p.m. now. The bottom photo was taken about the same time of the evening, showing how dark it is as the sun goes down by the slough in Big Traverse.

In The Keweenaw has been feeding the Hummingbirds in Copper Harbor. You can also see a few wasps flying around the feeder and a commenter said that wasps hate Bounce dryer sheets (they have to be the Bounce brand), so if you tie a few of them around near the feeders, it will keep those pesky wasps away .

Agreed, what a thoughtful way to remember two
young lives lost way too soon. Thanks for sharing.

Gorgeous pictures of the cabin and the sloughs,
cool vid...those little hummers can be quite
vicious!

Bounce dryer sheets work awesome on wasps. They
seem to like "Yellow", the last apt building I
lived in, had yellow siding, and in the Fall, the
wasps really liked it, and too many wasps would
get in when I opened the door....I tucked Bounce
sheets around the front and back doors, NO wasps!
Mowing the lawn, I'd tuck one under my hat, or
have one hanging out of my jeans pocket...they
work!

I have to admit we had a somewhat relaxed attitude
towards wearing a life jacket when we out in the
motorboat. A seat cushion with two large straps was
considered good enough. Later in life, when in the
Sunfish sailboat or the kayak, I did wear a
lifejacket. I felt the chances of those capsizing
were greater (and they did).

I like that the hummingbird feeder in the video had
red plastic flowers. That let the birds know where to
put their bills. Note that with their metabolism what
looks viciousness is probably desperate hunger.

Beautiful pics and we saw firsthand the lifejackets
there when we stopped to let Whit go for a swim.
What a terrific way to honor those young men. Next
time I go there, I'm going to donate a couple of the
jackets myself. So important, and it only takes an
instant for a good time to go bad, what a worthy
cause!!

What a great way to honor these two young men and
many more who've lost their lives in this lake. I
wish I'd known about this before I brought all of
our life jackets to Minnesota when we went. They'll
get good use there too, but I would have kept some

We watch hummingbirds so much out in our yard. I
love watching them and the goldfinches are very
hungry right now.
