Today’s star gazing photos were shot by Joanne Furton. I wouldn’t know where to begin to describe her photographs except to say they’re amazing, so the following description of this night sky event, is from Joanne herself, which is perfect:

“On August 13th, I scouted out Lake Manganese, near Copper Harbor MI, as a possibility for catching the MW and meteors that night and maybe even some star reflections. Nothing could have prepared me for the scene that night. The lake was perfectly still with more stars twinkling on the water than I had ever witnessed before in my life. There was also a little bit of sea smoke rising off the water, giving it an almost surreal appearance. To capture the scene as best as possible, I set up my tripod and camera right in the water and started shooting toward the Milky Way. The only sounds I could hear was the occasional fish jumping out of the water. The Park ranger checked in briefly, but besides that it was pure peaceful star gazing at its finest. I took a number of shots with both a 14mm and 35mm lenses. To get a properly exposed image in this low Bortle 2 dark sky, I had to bump the iso higher than normal. All but the one image with the meteor were created by stacking about 10- 20 images to get rid of as much noise in them as possible. I think it worked pretty well. Highly recommend this area for night sky viewing!”
