Today’s adventure with Michelle Lutke, Brett Biggers and Sisu is taking us to Black Slate Falls in Baraga County, near the town of Arvon. These falls are a series of short, stepping drops scattered along the Slate River for about a half mile and flows down from the old slate quarries, northwards towards Huron Bay. Michelle and company spent a day recently around Baraga County with some dirt road driving, hiking to hidden waterfalls and ending it with dinner at beautiful Lake Superior, while watching the sunset. Michelle said it was exactly how she wanted to spend the day.

Her video gives you a better idea of the day and how they spent it, with several waterfalls they visited, including the Black Slate Falls pictured above with Brett and Sisu, along with a number of dirt roads they went down, a great view of Lake Superior and the sunset, too. WOW!! Love the adventures of Michelle,
Brett, and Sisu! Think we just scratched the
surface visiting this area last year, it is quite
scenic with lots of waterfalls. Black Slate and
Quartzite Falls were the farthest north and
west we got from L’Anse. Even so, we saw an
amazing eight waterfalls that day on several
different rivers. A return to Canyon Falls was
our last stop of the day. The UP is just so
blessed with beauty to be found everywhere!

Oops - I meant to say north and EAST from L’Anse,
then worked our way back south.

I remember doing some field mapping in that area and yes, it is definitely remote. We spent the better part of three days out there and never saw another human.

That area of the UP rivals the Keweenaw for it's wonderful outdoor attractions. In addition to Black Slate Falls and Quarzite Falls on the Black Slate River. There also is the Silver River, the Huron River and it's mouth. There's Mt Arvon and Arvon Slate Quarry. The black board you remember from childhood may have come from here.

In this photo of the Black Slate River, that's not a timber sunken in the river. It's a quartzite vein.
