Today’s photos from Michelle Lutke take us to the Naubinway area, Trout Lake where Fiborn Karst Preserve is located. It’s a place I didn’t know about until I saw Michelle’s. She said it’s a great side adventure and they hadn’t been there in a while. They actually didn’t have time to explore the trails, as a storm was approaching this day, but she hopes to make some time to get back there soon.

I found the following information online: “The Fiborn Karst preserve is a 480 acre preserve that was once the site of a limestone quarry from 1905 to 1936 that supplied limestone to Algoma Steel in Sault Ste. Marie, Ontario. The Michigan Karst Conservancy purchased the property in 1987 and established the Fiborn Karst Preserve, managing it as a natural area open to the public under guidelines meant to prevent damage to natural features, vandalism and unsupervised, unsafe cave exploration. MKC volunteers gather once a month from May through October to perform maintenance and management work such as clearing and mowing trails, posting or repairing signs and occasionally cleaning graffiti in the quarry railroad house. At the preserve, there are two self-guided trails that offer visitors a look at the local geology and history of the area.” Sounds like there is some interesting history here...for more information click on the following link: Michigan Karst Conservancy

Michelle wraps up today for us, with a little something from the Monk Trails near Eagle Harbor, located in the Holy Transfiguration Monastic Park. It’s a 2.5 mile trail network featuring handmade wooden benches, scenic creeks and historic mine ruins from the Arnold Mine. E only stopped in Trout Lake one time. I think
that's where we saw the Scooby Doo van. The trails
and ruins look very cool. Maybe some day.

The monk trails look nice. It seems everywhere you
go around here you find ferns and waterfalls. What
a beautiful area we live in.

Holy cow, still another great looking area to
add to the bucket list. Never heard of this Karst
Preserve before, but Michelle and Brett sure do
get around! Appreciate the info.
We were fortunate to find the Monk Trails when
we visited Copper Harbor, another gem to explore.
Highly recommend a hike there!

I never heard of it either. No surprise for that
matter...I always only headed north. I was a Harbor
Rat. lol

Me too Donna, I never knew about this quarry. Or that quarry locations were selected according to the "impurities". Based on today's photos, I never really got the impression of it's depth, was it maybe an underground mine (since the mention of the caves)? Then I found this photo via Mary's link. It shows some better perspective.
