Jeff and Chris Dennis decided to go underground last week...on a Delaware Mine Tour, that is. In case you’re unfamiliar with the Delaware Mine, it is located 12 miles south of Copper Harbor. The mine was in operation from 1847 to 1887 where over 8 million tons of copper was mined from the five mine shafts there. Jeff captured Chris at the entrance to the mine, along with several photos inside the mine. Chris snapped a shot of Jeff (the third photo) with his “Big Bad John” impression, holding up the roof of the mine shaft just like in the song by Jimmy Dean, back in 1961. He looks pretty tough there, but I’m glad he really didn’t have to hold it up for folks to escape the mine, though.

Fritz didn’t go on the mine excursion, but enjoyed his own digging on the rocky shores of Lake Superior. Jeff said he spotted something run under those rocks and was quite busy trying to dig whatever it was out of there. So he had a makeshift mining adventure of his own.

remember my dog getting equally focused on getting at
whatever critter was hiding.

The other day we discussed room temperature vs warm
pasties. Thinking about it, the Cornish miners were
probably eating them room temperature. But, with due
respect to other folks' preferences & tradition, a room
temperature pasty doesn't appeal to me any more than a
room temperature hamburger.

How awesome! Now, you gotta teach him to find
agates!!

You guys are so brave to go inside that mine. I
could never work up the courage. Being
claustrophobic doesn't help.

Kathryn, my favorite way to eat a pasty is piping
hot out of the oven. But the next day, I do enjoy a
room temperature one with lots of salt. Nummy.

My sister-in-law makes THE best pasties and she and her daughter always keep a pasty on the counter to eat the next day...no refrigeration...but I'm not sure if they eat it at room temperature or if they warm them up.

If I warm them up, I need ketchup. The taste buds
sure are a strange thing.

That certainly looks like quite the underground
adventure! Years ago we visited some of the
above ground stuff at Delaware Mine. Recall a
Prehistoric Native American Copper Mine at this
site, and the people running the place had a pet
Skunk (descented of course) in the office at the time!
