If you’re a long time Pasty Cam viewer, you already know that Beth Jukuri absolutely enjoys being outdoors and moving in one way or another. Today’s adventures with Beth took place recently at F.J. McLain State Park on M-203 between Hancock and Calumet. It was a beautiful beach walk and trail time at the park with her daughter Abigail and her smiley little son. Beth is thrilled that he loves to be outdoors exploring and that she has another adventure grandchild. In the first and the last photos, you can just see the Keweenaw Waterway Upper Entrance Lighthouse off in the distance.
In case you were wondering what the F. J. stands for in the McLain State Park name, it is for Frederick J. McLain who was a Houghton County Commissioner that was instrumental in obtaining the land for the park in the 1930’s. This 443 acre park is best known for their campgrounds, sandy beaches, rocky shores along Lake Superior and scenic views of the lighthouse and breakwall that jut out into the Big Lake.
We join Seeking Discovery for another Keweenaw Adventure further north, as they take on Mount Baldy in the Keweenaw Peninsula near Eagle Harbor. Mount Baldy is the largest and least disturbed of only a handful of ‘balds’ remaining in the Keweenaw Peninsula and is protected by the Nature Conservancy in the Helmut & Candis Stern Preserve. A ‘northern bald’ is a type of rare rock ridgetop ecosystem restricted to large volcanic bedrock ridges and escarpments like those near Lake Superior. They feature sparse vegetation, exposed rock and extremely shallow, acidic soils.

Great pictures again, Beth. That little grandson is
so darn cute. Looks like he's having a ball.
I love the lighthouse pictures, too.

What a wonderful family outing! Looks like a
perfect day along the Superior shore, so cool!
Nice video too, but afraid I will never manage
that 7 mile round trip hike UP and down Mount
Baldy. Thanks so much for sharing :)
