On a recent adventure, Judy Byykkonen decided to check out the improvements to the Houghton Douglass Falls trail and found the new pedestrian bridge to be quite nice. She ventured further on the path to take in several views of the falls and quite the vista out beyond the falls, too. The improvements are ongoing at this time, so folks need to be careful as there are no guardrails at the edge of the cliff.

Visit Keweenaw’s webpage is filled with information about the Houghton Douglass Falls which is the tallest permanent, year-round plunge waterfall in Michigan, as it drops roughly 100 feet into a rugged, ancient Volcanic gorge. And they recommend out of all the Keweenaw Peninsula waterfalls, this is one you shouldn’t skip, as you haven’t seen any like this. They listed on their webpage, that the walk to the falls is generally considered an easy walk, flat and accessible, making it manageable for those with mobility considerations, including wheelchair users with assistance or powered devices and you can reach Hammell Creek via this maintained section. Beyond the pedestrian bridge, though, the trail transitions back to a more natural surface, with uneven terrain, so visitors with mobility issues should use caution past this point. UP waterfall has been on my radar for awhile,
so nice to see the new trail and bridge are done!
Understand there is more work planned at this
site, including some sort of Veterans Memorial.
Think visiting this place needs to move high up
on the bucket list lol!! Been way too long since
we’ve been to the Keweenaw. We usually wind
up staying closer to Munising, Marquette, or
the Soo. We should make Houghton our home
base for a few days and take in the sights around
there. The UP is blessed with so many truly
AMAZING places to go exploring :)

These are great. When my kids and grandkids w were
up for my mom's burial, they went to check it out.
So I saw their pictures. Impressive. It'll be nice
next year when there's a lookout.
