Laurie Bashaw and her hubby, Edward are at it again, camping and hiking in the Grand Marais/Munising area. They hiked 1 ½ miles on the North Country Trail, west of the Log Slide in Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore Park. They enjoyed beautiful vista views of Lake Superior, the point where Au Sable Light Station is, and the expansive Log Slide where in the past, loggers had built a long wooden chute on that dune slope and the slid logs down into Lake Superior where they could be floated to saw mills in Grand Marais. The part of the hike they really didn’t enjoy, were the mosquitoes...thankfully they were prepared with headgear to keep them at bay.

WOW! Gorgeous lakeshore hike, thanks so much for taking us along! Pictured Rocks is such a great Place to explore whether on foot, by vehicle, or from Lake Superior! No wonder it has become so popular, there is literally something for everyone, from the crystal waters at Sand Point to the deep lush forest along the Chapel Falls trail. We tend to visit a bit later to miss the peak blackfly and mosquito times. Saw that Miners Falls access will be closed for a few days for boring samples. They plan to upgrade the stairs and viewing platform in 2027, and create a rustic trail to the bottom of the canyon. You can see where people have been climbing down there for years, causing erosion problems. Afraid that new trail might be too steep for me lol! Has anyone heard when the washed out trail to Munising Falls might be rebuilt?

Checked the dates, in case you’re planning a visit. The Miners Falls Trail will be closed to all visitors from Tuesday, June 23 until Thursday, June 25.

Hi My parents and I once camped at 12 Mile Beach in the park. It was rustic: we pumped water by hand, there was no electricity and there were pit toilets. But the scenery was gorgeous. We watched the sun set over Lake Superior from the back of our campsite. We did take the hike from Hurricane River to the lighthouse, led by a naturalist.
Other times we camped with friends at Bay Furnace and visted some of the sites in the video as day trips.

Donna, thank you for the kind words. The UP is definitely my happy place! Enjoy keeping up with what’s going on there and researching new places to go when we get a chance to return. Have a few spots in mind that we need to get to!
