Michelle Lutke and Brett Biggers, the folks behind the webpage, Wandering Michigan, really do wander all around the U.P. looking for adventure to share. Today they’re taking us to southern Ontonagon County, near Watersmeet to explore the Wildcat Falls. Michelle says this waterfall is a short back road drive from where they live in Ewen and one of their favorite, local, hidden gems. She adds that it’s not a huge waterfall but is a short and sweet hike with plenty to see along the way. So if you’re looking for a more off the beaten path kind of trail that is a somewhat hidden adventure, be sure to add this one to your list.
In case you’re wondering about the silky, smooth water in the falls photos, that is normally achieved with a slow shutter speed and the use of a tripod. The slow shutter speed lets more light in to the sensor, so the moving water then blurs together in a soft, smooth sheet rather than individual, sharp droplets frozen in time.
The video Michelle captured gives a look at the falls in ‘real time’, so you can see what the water looks like without the slower shutter speed. The falls are absolutely beautiful either way and I for one am glad Michelle and Brett wander all around the U.P. capturing these hidden gems for us to see.

Hi First, I find the trailhead map, with its different textures for different features, interesting. It does look like a nice hike.

A lovely set of photos/video! Looks like a great hike to another waterfall I’ve not heard of before. Love that rock wall too, quite impressive! And a nice job with the exposure effects on the flowing water. Thanks for sharing!
