Beth Jukuri is helping to decorate the Houghton Waterfront as a local partner, joining up with the Houghton Beautification Committee. To celebrate America’s 250th Anniversary the Committee and partners are painting stars for their 2026 project. Last year they painted fish to decorate the waterfront trail and the downtown Waterfront Walkway near the library to add color to the area. You can get in on the painting and decorating today at the Portage Lake District Library in Houghton, from 10 am to 7 pm. Check out the video they made to advertise this fun event: Star Painting

We join Detroit PBS – Under the Radar for a look at the UP’s beautiful Keweenaw Peninsula, including some fun things to do in Houghton. The lead-in says: “On this episode of UTR, we’re back in the UP’s beautiful Keweenaw Peninsula for Houghton’s hotspot (Observatory Lounge), shaken not stirred. Some history that’ll literally move you (Keweenaw Pedal Trolley Tours) and a legendary lodge (Keweenaw Mountain Lodge). We’ll even show you an amazing place you’ll want a sauna (Takka Sauna). Get ready to explore the cool people, places and things.”

Hi
It's nice to see folks being creative and beautifying
their town. Down here in Jackson we have murals on the
walls of the buildings. The city had what they call
Bright Walls festival for a few years: watching the
artists at work, food, music. They have run out of
spaces to decorate, though.

I did see that episode of UTR.

How wonderful...I'm so glad to see this.

Great Video...I like those UTR vids.

Thanks again for the reminder!

Even in the darkest days, the moon and sun make
their ancient, reliable journeys. Birds sing. Some
green thing insists on growing in a ravaged land.
Our own human life force refuses to give up.

I can't wait to take a walk down on the waterfront.
It's really going to be beautiful.

I'd like to live in Houghton or Hancock; I don't
necessarily have to live on the water as long as
we have access to the lakes with a short drive.
The video is always enjoyable to watch, though I
find the business plan of the owners of the
Keweenaw Mt Lodge quite puzzling, and that they
turn away potential customers for everything
unless you're staying there on a specialized
trip??? I just don't see how they can stay afloat
with this mode of operation and snubbing the
locals as well.

Great stuff today, way to go Mary, on top of your
game as always!!

Where is that, lets say, open space is at in
Houghton? In the first picture? Thank You.

By Mickillmouse (Mickillmouse) on Tuesday, May 5, 2026 - 03:55 am:

Sorry for the extra post, did not see it til
afterwards. LOL

Yeah, it almost sounds like people who rent the
cabins at Mountain Lodge, can not just go in and
have dinner? or breakfast.
Great video

By Mary Drew at Pasty Central (Mdrew) on Tuesday, May 5, 2026 - 08:52 am:

Mickillmouse...That space in the first photo is located between the Michigan Made store and the Print Shop in downtown Houghton. It used to be the street where you would have driven onto the parking deck before that was demolished. It's now a gathering spot for foot traffic only.

If you'd like more information about the Keweenaw Mountain Lodge, here's a link to their webpage...it explains more about the dinner experience, the cabins, golfing and more for the folks that are staying there: Keweenaw Mountain Lodge
