Michelle Lutke said they’ve been waiting a long time for the ice to melt off the Lake Superior Shores, so they could get busy doing a bit of rockhounding. Today’s finds were from Bucky’s – a.k.a. Calumet Waterworks Park. Look at those calm waters off shore! Of course there was still some snow right when you got into the park, but the stairs down to the Big Lake and all those rocks were clear. Michelle had many more finds than the three featured here today, but we could only share so many. I won’t pretend to know what these three stones are, except that they are beauties and would probably make some nice jewelry. My favorite though, is the last one...it seems to have a sad face on it for some reason. Maybe it didn’t want to be found or maybe it was putting on that face so Michelle would rescue it and take it home with her. Only the rock knows for sure! You can check out more of Michelle’s photos on their webpage: Wandering Michigan

Today’s video comes to us from Doing It With Dish, checking out Raging Waters in Michigan’s U.P.-Flooded Rivers & Powerful Waterfalls After Rain & Snowmelt. The lead-in says: “Heavy rains and melting snow have transformed the Upper Peninsula of Michigan into a roaring, water-filled landscape. In this video, we explore swollen rivers spilling over their banks and waterfalls at peak power—thundering, misty, and more intense than you’ll usually ever see them. From normally calm streams turned into rushing currents to waterfalls crashing with incredible force, this is the raw beauty (and power) of nature on full display in the U.P. If you love Michigan’s wilderness, this is a side of it you don’t want to miss. Watch as we hike, explore, and take in the sights and sounds of these flooded waterways. Stay safe out there—conditions can change fast!”

Hi
I have picked up rocks just because I like the way they
look. I never have them polished so I try to pick ones
that look good dry.

The video showed a lot of high water. I particularly
like the way the stairs to Bond Falls became a
waterfall in their own right.

My husband loves searching for rocks at Bucky's. Of
course, he prefers agates. Love these pictures.

Beautiful pics! Awesome video! Nice to see a
different part of our world....I always just went
north!

I just watched a vid of Native quotes, and I love
this one:

"Walk lightly in the Spring. Mother Earth is
pregnant".

Native American Proverbs

Beautiful pics & great video!! I've never been a
rock collector, do remember when my uncles would
walk the beaches on the northern shore, drinking a
couple of beers and they would go by a picker bent
over in the water and drop marbles by them and they
were so brilliant marbles they would pick them up
and be PO'd that someone was dropping marbles in the
lake, they'd just keep walking and laughing away,
cruel I suppose.
Donna, that is a great quote and really true as
well.

Hi
Donna, I applaud the sentiment.

Uncle Chuck, good to hear from you. Interestingly, my
favorite "rock" was beach glass. If those marbles roll
around long enough....

Kathryn, When my grandson was here last weekend he
and his girlfriend found a bunch of glass on Eagle
Harbor beach. They were so excited. They also found
some yooper lights at Bucky's. No agates, though.

Question: Does anyone know why Calumet Waterworks
Park is called Bucky's?

By Charlie at Pasty Central (Chopper) on Thursday, April 30, 2026 - 04:27 am:

Historically, the name comes from Bucky’s Candy Store, which was operated by the Schroeder family (specifically Bucky Schroeder).

In the early-to-mid 20th century, the store was located in a building just above the park on the "sweeping corner" of Tamarack Waterworks Road. For generations of Calumet residents, stopping at "Bucky's" for snacks or ice cream on the way to the Lake Superior shore was a regular ritual.

Even after the store closed and the building eventually became a private residence (and later a vacation rental), the name stuck. Today folks simply refer to the beach and the surrounding park as "Bucky’s"

Rock #3 is spooky.
