The Robins are back in the Keweenaw, a sure sign that it must be Spring! Chris Hendra captured some outstanding photos while doing some bird-watching in Misery Bay, Toivola recently. His first photo shows the patch of grass where the snow has already melted, making it easier for the Robins to find something to eat. Then the rest of the shots are a sequence of the Robin finding a worm and succeeding in getting it out of the ground and into its mouth. Quite the ordeal, even flinging it into the air. I’m guessing maybe it was a struggle to get it out of the ground, but once it was, lunch was ready! You can check out more of Chris’s photography here: Chris Hendra Photography

Let’s go birding in the Copper Country with Tom Oliver, wildlife biologist and Visit Keweenaw with their latest Crossing Place video, ‘Copper Country on the Wing: Birding in the Keweenaw’. The lead-in says: “The Keweenaw Peninsula is one of the best places to bird in Michigan, thanks to its incredible diversity of habitats and year-round opportunities. In the Copper Country, you can experience forests, marshes, shoreline, and open landscapes all within a short distance, making it easy to explore no matter your pace. Wildlife biologist Tom Oliver highlights how the Keweenaw’s position along the Mississippi Flyway turns it into a natural "crossing place" for migratory birds, bringing a wide range of species through the region each season. Whether you’re new to birding or already hooked, it doesn’t take much to get started here - just step outside, tune in, and discover how it adds a new layer of connection to the landscape.”

WOW....now, THAT is some spectacular
photography...to get the bird and worm like that!
Epic....Robins can "hear" the worm underground....

The Crossing Place videos are the best...

Brockway Mountain is in the path of the migration
of the Birds of Prey. Try to get there in the
Spring...it is so amazing. I got to sit up there
for awhile one Spring...and coming back down the
mountain, I pulled over to watch the Eagles riding
the thermals....and that is just spectacular to
see!~

Hi
Donna, that sounds like a great experience, I envy you.
When I worked in Ann Arbor, I used to go to a park with
trails beside the Huron River. I didn't see any
migrating eagles but it was a good place to see
migrating waterfowl. I saw a loon on more than one
occasion.

Awesome photos. I have yet to see a robin this
year.

Just like geese, I see robins year round nowadays.
