The first shot here today was snapped from Tadych’s parking lot in Houghton, looking across the canal at a little bit of Hancock. Nancy Haun took the photo and says that it makes her think of a New England town. The setting sun really brings out the colors brilliantly. Some folks commented that it looks like a painting and several others thought it would make a great puzzle!

In the next two photos, we get a look at the DSS&A (Duluth, South Shore & Atlantic) Railroad Boarding House in Herman. Nancy figures her ‘good bones’ are almost gone and the heavy snows this winter have really done her in. Pretty sad to see a once vital building in such disrepair. The bottom photo was snapped a number of years ago when the Boarding House was still standing proud. We normally share ‘current’ photos on these pages, but I figured you’d like to see it in its better days.

The same goes for Nancy’s video here today...it’s from a few years ago, recorded there in Herman while she was waiting for the Canadian National train to pass by the DSS&A Railroad Boarding House, with the old Ford Truck in the photo, too. She was trying to create an idea she had for a Christmas Card. She said she had fun picking the right tree to go in the back of the truck and her perfect spot to get the CN just as it hit the RR house and Ford Truck. She figured she only had about two seconds if she was snapping a photo, so she decided on a video, then she would have more opportunity for a good photo. She hadn’t figured on a dense fog coming in and she couldn’t get it all in the way she wanted. She did get a photo from the video, but it wasn’t quite what she had envisioned, so she went back another day to try again. I forgot to ask if she was successful on that next attempt, but I’m guessing she probably was.

Happy Tax Day

That 1st photo really could be a painting. It's so
pretty. What a shame so many places are just
falling down. It'd be nice if they could have been
restored. But life goes on, I guess. Thanks, Nancy.
And Mary, it was nice to see the older picture of
it.

Hi
Happy tax day, hope everyone is done filing. Alex,
looking at past years, you did tax prep, but I think
that you're currently retired, yes?

Speaking of old posts, April 15 2004 features somebody
in a parka sitting in a chair in the water, binoculars
fixed on something. The photo inspired a lot of posts
speculating on what the person was doing.

Kathryn, I remember that picture.

Speaking of buildings falling, I just read in the
Keweenaw Reporter, the old Thurner Bakery in
Calumet fell. Too much snow on the roof~

To Donna: I believe it was a garage, that was
attached to the Thurner Bakery building, that fell.

LOVE the video. Thank You, Nancy.

I was just coming back to say that. The Gazette
says thar, but the online option said Thurner's,
and that brought back delicious memories!

By David S. (Yooperdfs) on Wednesday, April 15, 2026 - 02:35 pm:

Oh yeah, Thurners back in the day had the best
crusty bread and pastries, and the price was right.
Gone forever, sadly.

By Donna (Donna) on Wednesday, April 15, 2026 - 03:06 pm:

No doubt David S....nothing like one of those
crusty rolls/bread, anything from Thurner's!

I do a trivia game. One of today's questions:

Question: What major event prompted the United
States government to introduce its first federal
income tax?

Answer: The first federal income tax in the
United States was introduced during the American
Civil War as a way to help fund the Union’s war
efforts. In 1861, Congress passed the Revenue Act,
establishing a modest tax on personal income,
which was later expanded in 1862 into a more
structured, progressive system. This marked the
first time the federal government directly taxed
individual earnings. Although the tax was repealed
after the war, it set a precedent that eventually
led to the permanent income tax system established
by the 16th Amendment in 1913.

Thurners Bakery had good pastries, deserts, that I
remember.
