Over at 906 Images, Shannon has been keeping busy capturing waves near the Presque Isle Lighthouse in Marquette. From the looks of that second photo, I think Shannon’s camera and he himself took on a bit of watery spray. Those are some wild waves hitting and breaking over the wall there, too. Perfect reason to stay off the breakwall, especially on windy and stormy days. Lake Superior was definitely kicking up her heels, showing off the power of the Big Lake, reminding us that she can be stunningly beautiful even when she’s rocking and rolling. It’s a mesmerizing display no matter if she’s calm and serene or thrashing and splashing.

Shannon wraps UP this Big Lake day with a compilation video he put together of the Gale Force storms on Lake Superior this winter. It’s just amazing the power of the wind and waves!

These are all so glorious...and that video...I wish
I lived on the shores of Superior....(although, I
have a friend who does, and she says there are
nights you just can't sleep because of the noise).

These are different. I love them!

Hi
The one labelled "Big Wave" is my favorie, although the
first picture is also striking.

Donna, I've never been unable to sleep due to wind or
wave noise at our place on Lake Huron. But then we
built our place within code, far enough back that we
don't have to worry about erosion taking out our
foundation (or lie awake listening to the waves and
worrying about erosion taking out our foundation). ;>)

Hi again
This is nothing to do with today's post, but you
might find it interesting. I was listening to an NPR
program called "Stateside", which has stories about
Michigan. One of today's stories was about something
called the Toledo War.

Both Michigan, which was only a territory, and Ohio,
which was already a state, wanted the land around
Toledo, & the port. There were various shenanigans,
though the only bloodshed was one guy getting stabbed
with a penknife (he was fine). Finally the Federal
government stepped in and made the offer of statehood
for Michigan (which the governor really wanted) if
we'd give up designs on the Toledo strip. Oh yeah,
and you can also have the western UP (we already had
the eastern UP).

The governor accepted but at the time most
Michiganders were disgruntled. Now, however, it's
hard to imagine not having the UP, especially the
western UP.

I knew we got the western UP for Toledo, but didn't
know the whole story. Thanks, Kathryn.

There's you tubes on that...interesting stuff. I
think Restless Viking did an adventure on that too.
They are a couple that go on the most fun
adventures and you always learn something history
too...I'm addicted!!
