Redridge is located about 13 miles west of Houghton, near Freda and is a historic copper mining ghost town, most famous for the Redridge Steel Dam. It is also known by locals like Deborah Goodell and Mandy Cadwell as a great place to take friends on a winter adventure to check out the massive ice walls that form on the cliffs out there along Lake Superior’s shoreline. So much beauty, so little time. Again I’m reminded how lucky we are to have sites like this to visit and enjoy, virtually right in our own backyards. Plus, the views change with every season change we enjoy, also. Although, when the Big Lake isn’t frozen you can only view these walls by boat. I wonder if the water seeps out all year long, over and down the sandstone cliffs?

Kristin Ojaniemi over at Discover the U.P. shares episode 172 of Discovering, taking us Ice Fishing on Munising Bay. The lead-in says: “I hit Lake Superior ice on Munising Bay with Marquette Adventures in the hopes of landing some whitefish and splake topside. The guides let me catch most of the fish so they had to run the camera! I caught a trifecta for the day with a bonus coho and at the end of the day fried up the whitefish for some delicious fish tacos.”

Spectacular pictures. These gals look like they're
enjoying themselves.

Hi
Yes, you are lucky to be able to see those ice
formations up close & personal.

I don't think I'm cut out for ice fishing, since I
don't havethe patience for it even in the summer. There
was a guy named Pat McManus who wrote humorous stories
about his outdoor misadventures. I remember one called
"Cold Fish", about ice fishing, that was hilarious.
