According to the Keweenaw County Snowfall Totals webpage, as of last Friday, we had 263.5 inches of snow so far. From Tuesday last week to Friday, we received 38.25 inches of snow. That’s in FOUR days. Ron and Deb Simons have some photos of what all that snow looks like. Deb is up to her knees in the snow before she started shoveling the steps to their deck, then the deck in back of the house and in front of the house. Ron’s job is clearing the driveway, which had a decent size drift the length of it. Then the last photo is after the driveway was cleared of the snow, their roof let loose the snow that was on it, depositing it on the freshly cleared driveway. Thankfully, their neighbor came and helped him shovel and snowblow that last mess. It was beginning to feel like the movie “Groundhog Day” that kept repeating the same thing for days on end. Several of those days, we were shoveling and plowing two and three times a day to try to keep up with it. Thankfully we’re on the downside of winter, but someone needs to tell the snowmaker that, please!

If you watched any of the Olympics the past few weeks and were wondering about the sport of Curling, we’ve got an older episode of Discovering with Kristin Ojaniemi, that features the Copper Country Curling Club in Calumet. They explain the game and how it works. The lead-in says: “A historic drill house from the Upper Peninsula copper mining days turned into a curling rink. Calumet, Michigan is the center of the copper boom and today, locals have found interesting ways of preserving the historic buildings and creating fun, sporting opportunities. And I have no business being on a sheet of ice.”

Hi
The shovelling and plowing is definitely a downside
of winter. I have had to re-clear snow from my
driveway and door after roof-raking. But it was a
relatively small area, not the whole length of the
driveway. Deb S., nice to see what you look like.

The snow is unreal this year, for sure. It's been
really hard to keep UP with it. I think we're up to
about 279" now, with a little more in Keweenaw Co.
If you enjoy shoveling and snowblowing, this is the
place to be.

I've never enjoyed curling until this year. In the
early mornings of the Olympics, that's what was on
and I really got into it. We watched the mixed
doubles pair from Duluth, Cory and Korey, win a
silver medal. I got hooked on it and watched every
USA match that I could. The women's team almost got
the bronze but lost out to Canada. The game still
confuses me some, but I know a lot more about it
than I did. It's cool that there's a curling club
in Calumet.

And Kathryn, there's a picture in my profile, I
believe.

We need more snow. My guess for the contest was
over 300 inches, and we got months to go...I'm sure
we'll be close to the record, if not breaking it!

I watched the curling events during the Olympics
too...I have no clue...but sure enjoyed it! The
skating was beautiful, and those moguls scare
me...how you have teeth left after coming down
those things, amazes me...so much more on those
Olympics and the beginning and closing ceremonies
were just beautiful.

I was just reminded how much I HATE snow.

Isn't curling just shuffleboard on ice?
