Jeff Dennis is taking us on a Portage Lake Lift Bridge tour, starting on the Houghton waterfront which he says...”this view will do just fine.” I totally agree, surrounded by winter, including the big snowman head, it’s a really nice look with the lights giving the scene a delightful glow. Then Jeff takes us right onto the Bridge walkway, looking ahead to Hancock and Ripley on the right. The next scene is looking down the iced-over canal toward the Ranger III at her winter dock, along with the Dee Stadium and the other buildings on the waterfront. It must have been a cold morning, as you can see the trees are frosted and the smoke from the buildings is lingering in the cold air. Jeff’s last “Bridge” shot is a close-up of the finger expansion joints on the deck of the Bridge. These are a type of mechanical device that is used to allow for movement and expansion in a structure, such as the bridge.
Jeff’s bottom photo was snapped back in Lake Linden, where he was having several parking spaces added in his lot, with the removal of the snow that’s accumulated when he plows. He said getting it cleared out is like a victory in the battle against winter. This year, it seems to be a never-ending battle.
Since it’s Valentine’s Day, I thought it would be fun to share Michigan Rocks video of Rob creating stone hearts. He’s making them out of Puddingstone, Petoskey stone and Kona dolomite. Once you watch the short video, you may be concerned with how close his fingers get to the saw blade, but he explains why it’s nothing to worry about in another video that you can watch by clicking here: You’ll Cut Your Finger Off On That Rock Saw!

Hi The photo of the Ranger is what I think of as a winter palette of color: white and various blues.
I had mixed emotions about the stones being made into hearts. I like the natural unpolished rocks. However, if you're going to have jewelry, I do prefer semiprecious stones.
