Earlier this week, we had some rusty ice curtains in the Ontonagon area. Today we head over to Marquette with Shannon from 906 Images to check out the white ice framing the view of Lake Superior, along with a frozen Superior Shoreline. Quite a contrast in colors and a totally different type of icy wonderland. The wind whips the waves around, plastering water that freezes just about immediately upon everything in its path. Nature definitely has an artistic flair and we are more than lucky to get to enjoy it through the eyes of folks like Shannon and the other photographers who get out there capturing and sharing it with us all.

Shannon’s video was recorded on one of our windy, stormy days recently, with 50 mph winds along Lake Superior, with up to 20 foot waves. Shannon said he could barely fight the wind walking in to where he made this video. You can hear the wind and see the trees waving and swaying, along with an angry Superior... it even sounds cold, if there is such a thing.

An update about the Heikinpaiva-schedule...The Polar Plunge has been rescheduled, due to the "extreme cold" forecast with possible -40° windchills. It will now take place during MTU Winter Carnival, on February 7th, instead.

Also note these cancellations in the schedule:
About three hours after declaring most other Heikinpäivä activities would go on as scheduled, Wiederhold issued a statement from Jim Kurtti, of Copper Country Finns and Friends, with changes to the Heikinpäivä schedule.

“The officers of CCF&F met via Zoom this evening regarding the weather conditions, which aren’t going to let up until late Saturday morning, Jim Kurtti wrote. “Some of us have been receiving calls and cancellations from concerned folks. And, weighing in the fact that the area schools, including MTU are closed on Friday, we have concluded it is prudent to cancel the following outdoor events:

• Parade
• Games (kicksleds, wife-carrying)
• The Bear Spiral

Kurtti said in addition to the Polar Plunge, Club Finndigo at the Calumet Theater, slated for tonight, will be rescheduled and the Snowshoe event at Haasto Hiihto has been canceled.

However, despite the weather, Kurtti said other events will go on as planned:

• Snow Sculpting Invitational – 23-25 Jan – Hancock’s Green
• The two tori markets – Finnish American Heritage Center & the United Methodist Church
• The lectures “The Magic of Sauna Textiles” (1:30) with Lisa Steinmann and Karen Rue, and “Finno-Ugric World Tour”
• Animal Life: Art from the Kalevala (Community Art Center)
• Iltamat (evening of dance and light buffet) — Finnish American Heritage Center
• Sauna Stories (oral histories) – 25-30 Jan.
• Sauna Week Tours – 31 Jan (Sat.) – 10am – 3pm. Tickets available at North Wind Books.

These photos are amazing. Thanks for sharing them.

UP Today was in Hancock today for the festivities.
They couldn't stay out long. My gosh, you could
easily get frostbite. Speaking of, time to go out
to do some shoveling. Every day this week we've
been plowed in. Ugh!!

That first picture needs to be blown way up, and
hung all over towns in the dead of a hot summer
day...That picture is absolutely glorious. I love
it.

Hi
The photos are otherworldly. My favorites are the
first and the third.

Alex, I take it the pictures inspire you to leave
for Margaritaville?
