The only thing Mandy Cadwll loves more than her horses and critters, are these two little cuties dressed in pink, her beautiful granddaughters. They were out at Grandma’s helping her with the horses, but of course also having a grand time climbing snowbanks and playing in the snow. Mandy made sure the girls were dressed for activities in the cold weather, as she does for her horses, too. Check out the neat blankets her equines wear in the cold winter temperatures to keep them warm and protect them when the winds are howling. Of course they have shelters (barns) to go in, too, but the blankets and neck warmers help them to stay toasty when the temperatures drop. Of course this day, the sun was shining, so they were all out enjoying that, but I have to say, they look pretty comfortable and happy.

Visit Keweenaw shares a new Crossing Place video: The Art of a Keweenaw Winter – The Heikinpäivä Snow Sculpting Invitational. It features, Todd Gast, Community Development for the City of Hancock, talking about the upcoming event that will take place January 23rd to the 25th. The Lead-in says: “In the Keweenaw, we don’t just move snow - we celebrate it. During Heikinpäivä, Hancock’s Quincy Green becomes a gathering place where winter is shaped by hand, imagination, and a deep love for the season. The Heikinpäivä Snow Sculpting Invitational brings artists from the Keweenaw and far beyond to work with the same simple palette: a cube of natural Keweenaw snow. What emerges is more than art. It’s small-town winter, shared joy, and a tradition built from the snow we’re lucky enough to have - carrying us into the magic of Michigan Tech's Winter Carnival!”

Beautiful horses and adorable little girls. Those,
along with the blue skies, make for beautiful
winter pictures.

Hi
I wonder if the horses would grow shaggy winter
coats if they didn't have blankets? Of course I'm no
expert.

It was sunny down here yesterday; the snowy woods
were lovely when I went for my walk at our nature
center. The video was enjoyable, and I wish the TV
weather people here had some of the attitude of the
people in Hancock.

Putting a blanket on a horse is generally not
needed. Their body temps run warmer than ours.
A blanket will keep a horse from growing good
winter hair. Elderly, sickly, body clipped horses
or with no shelter would be horses in need of
blankets.I have owned horses for 60+ years and
never used
blankets on my horses and they have lived to be
over 30 years old. But to each his own. I have seen
the pros and cons of either choice.
