According to Michelle Lutke, if you haven’t seen Bond Falls in the winter, she highly recommends doing so. She was there after a snow storm, the end of December and captured the gorgeous blue sky and clouds, along with some outstanding shots of the falls along the way. If you’re unfamiliar, Bond Falls is on the middle branch of the Ontonagon River, a few miles east of Paulding in southern Ontonagon County. Michelle added that she’s looking forward to getting back out to visit more frozen waterfalls... very soon! Sounds like some great U.P. adventures coming UP! Check out Michelle and Brett’s webpage here: Wandering Michigan

Speaking of U.P. adventures, Nathan the Invincible, over at Visit Keweenaw, has a fun night time idea, skiing by star and trail lights...the lead-in says: “Nathan clips in at the Michigan Tech Trails for a peek at one of the Keweenaw’s best after-dark adventures. Cross-country skiers can ski in the glow nightly on Birch, Isle Royale, Oak, Balsam, Linden, and Peepsock from 6-9am and 6-9pm. Grab a trail or day pass and glide into a true bucket list moment under the stars!”

Hi
I'll have to see Bond Falls sometime, along with a
lot of other U.P. waterfalls featured here.

My mom and I used to ski at night but never on
lighted trails. If you are in an open area, like a
field or a golf course, you can see fine; the snow
reflects what light there is. Moonlight or city
light glow under clouds are better than starlight
but even then we could cope. My local nature
center has night hikes every so often. Even
without snow we can see OK once our eyes adjust.
We can't tell pink from orange but we aren't
walking into trees.

Always loved the Paulding, Bond Lake area. Many
years ago, early 1980's, I and my friends from
Illinois used to vacation and fish Bond Lake. Lots
of adventures. One morning we got up out of our
campers, ate breakfast, sat on lawnchairs on shore
looking at the rough lake. Then my friend Bob
Manning notices something, way out on the water.
Looked like possibly, there were people in the
water. We jumped in our two 12 foot boats, headed
out and sure enough there were 3 young guys in the
water, their little john boat went down. Only one
had a life jacket, all 3 were turning blue in the
May cold water. We, the 4 of us scooped them up
and get them ashore. They seemed pretty happy
about it. Gees, almost 46 years ago.

David S., I love going out on the water, swimming or
boating, but I was raised to be careful and to check
conditions. On the other hand, there's the saying
"It's difficult to make anything foolproof because
fools are so ingenious".

My memories of night skiing with my mom are more
than 50 years old, but I kept the practice up
through adulthood. Now that I'm retired & can go out
during the business day I haven't done it in a
while.

Bond Falls never disappoints. I love going there,
though I haven't gone in the winter. These shots
are gorgeous and it's nice to see some color with
the blue sky.

Looks like a great
adventure! We went
snowmobiling on
New.Years Eve and
once our eyes got
used to the dark,
everything became
clear.
Kathyrn Laughlin;
Your remark,
“We can’t tell pink
from orange…”
reminds me of the
song by
The Moody Blues,
Nights in White Satin.
The ending goes;
“Cold-hearted orb that rules the night
Removes the colours from our sight
Red is grey is yellow white
But we decide which is right
And which is an illusion”

By Kathyrn Laughlin (Kathyl) on Sunday, January 11, 2026 - 06:50 pm:

Alex, I'm glad somebody else had a winter night
experience. And I remember that Moody Blues song.
