Jeff Dennis, his wife Chris (pictured here) and Fritz got in one last kayak adventure for 2025 at the end of December. That’s beautiful Bete Grise with Mount Bohemia in the background behind Chris. It looks quite chilly, but Chris is bundled up to keep the cold at bay. In the next shot, Fritz is hunkered down in the kayak, taking in the view from the channel, too. It remains to be seen if the Dennis family kayaking will continue into January and beyond.

They had company on this adventure... when they came upon a beaver on the edge of the water and then watched as he walked up on the shore, perhaps looking for branches and other food sources. I thought beavers hibernated in the winter, but after doing an Internet search, I found that they are active year-round, just less visible in the winter as they stay in their lodges, swimming under the ice to access the food they’ve stored in underwater caches. They actually get ready for the winter months by building up fat reserves in their tails and gathering branches and roots near their lodge so they’re easy to get to when the water freezes. Pretty amazing.

Visit Keweenaw has a list in today’s video, of five Keweenaw festivals that will be coming up...they said these events just might make you fall in love with winter! From snow statues and street snowboarding, to sled dogs, ski races and pure Sisu. Find out more about what’s coming UP here: Keweenaw winter festivals

These people are so much braver than I am. Looks
like fun but oh so. Fritz is smart to hunker down.

Hi
I was glad to see Fritz inside the kayak. I don't
see myself doing winter kayaking. I've only tipped
over the kayak once, but I always assume it's
possible whenever I go out. Sorta like I know
falling is possible whenever I go cross-country
skiing. I'm willing to risk a fall on snow but not
a dunking in winter water.

Down here in Jackson it is very windy with sun &
clouds. The temperature, currently in the 50's, is
supposed to drop to the 30's.

Great pics...Kathyrn..I thought the same thing...a
dunk in that lake would change my mind on kayak's
forever!

Awesome pics! And a really great vid. Wish I could
do all that stuff. But, I'll leave it to the pros.

Gutsy pics!
Jeff, Chris and Fearless
Fritz must be confident
kayakers heading out
on the lake in cold
weather like that.
And so much to do in
the Keweenaw. At one
time I was seriously
considering retiring
UP there; I was healthy
and strong enough to
handle the winter snows
, but then MS hit me
and and shot a hole
in that bucket list.

Hi
Alex, I hope you're still able to find some fun.
Interesting how when we're young we assume that
we'll still be just as fit when we retire.
