You won’t often find Stacey Flood just sitting around when there are adventures to be had in the Keweenaw. She takes us on one of her recent adventures beginning at the Phoenix Church, officially called Church of the Assumption. Stacey also gives us a glimpse into one of the windows there with the candles glowing. First known as St. Mary’s Church, built in 1858 in the nearby community of Cliff. In 1899 the church was dismantled and reassembled in Phoenix and renamed the Church of the Assumption. Masses were held there until 1957. Then in 1985 the Keweenaw County Historical Society took over the property and began extensive repair and restoration work to what you see here today.
Stacey’s next stop was for a look at the Eagle Harbor Lighthouse from across the iced in Harbor. This is always a classic view of the light and a bonus when you can snap the picture with the beacon light glowing. The ice on the harbor waters looks shiny and still with a hint of blue settling on the scene.
The last two photos show off some interesting icicles Stacey found somewhere in the Eagle Harbor area. Unique, these upward-growing ice formations are called ice stalagmites, formed from dripping water freezing on top the ice, appearing as a spike or other irregular shapes.

Nicey, icey pics! I’ve got those UP Blues, but this time it’s not from the sky, it’s from the ice. The video was a bit long so I may watch it later

Beautiful pictures! Question – who pays the utilities for the Phoenix church?
By Mary Drew at Pasty Central (Mdrew) on Thursday, January 8, 2026 - 10:11 pm:
Uncle Chuck,
I would guess that the Keweenaw County Historical Society pays the utilities for the church, since they are the caretakers for the church and a number of other historic sites in the Keweenaw.

The downward icicles could be called stalactites. I always remember which is which by the saying, when the mites go up the tights come down.

The fourth and fifth pics remind me of a photo from years ago and I believe it was called “The Lake Superior Monster” or something like that. And it was one of the most dramatic photos that I’ve ever seen. I’ve scoured the past years, but no luck. Any suggestions, Mary?
