You might be thinking we have had a number of scenes from Bucky’s (a.k.a Calumet Waterworks Park) lately and you’re right. Reason being is that every day, even every hour, things change so much there and with the winds we have been getting here in the Keweenaw, Lake Superior is rocking and rolling again. Thanks to Judy Byykkonen, we get a look at the beauty Superior has created along the icy shoreline, with what looks like sculptures poking out of the snow and ice. It’s actually branches that have been sprayed and frozen with the waters of the Big Lake. That last photo reminds me of shiny, glassy pearls. So beautiful and so different looking, but the next time you head out there, they may have disappeared again. So enjoy them for the moment here.

Judy also recorded a video of the ice chunks in the water, sloshing around, back and forth as the waves send them into shore and splashing up on the ice shelf that’s forming there. Mesmerizing to watch and listen to the wind and the waves.

Wow...those pics with the icy pearls are so gorgeous. And no doubt...it'll change mighty quick!

Awesome pics Judy! Well done!!!

Nice pics, Judy!!!
Question: how do you make pop-circles out of Branch-circles?

By Donna (Donna) on Monday, January 5, 2026 - 11:02 am:

Totally off topic, but the most beautiful thing I have seen, is a Frenchman who goes by "Plumes", who sings to animals...and they sing back, and/or dance. It is beyond gorgeous and we need this in this world really bad. I LOVE when the critters sing and dance. It truly melts my heart! Look for him on You Tube!

I always have to chuckle when I hear calumet
waterworks referred to as 'Buckys'. I would really
like to know if anyone other than myself actually
knows who Bucky was?

By David S. (Yooperdfs) on Monday, January 5, 2026 - 02:01 pm:

I have to ask, does anyone here actually know who
Bucky was, other than myself. At 75 years old, I
knew Bucky back in the 1950's

By Donna (Donna) on Monday, January 5, 2026 - 03:54 pm:

Who was Bucky? Tell us David S.!

By David S. (Yooperdfs) on Monday, January 5, 2026 - 05:15 pm:

Bucky was a nickname, formally known as Francis
O'Connor, a short stocky little Irishman. He worked
at a Calumet bank during the day then went to his
little candy store at Calumet Waterworks park late
afternoon and evening. Only
a small cement foundation remains on the north end
of the park now. Most everyone in the UP knew him
and would stop by for ice cream and candy/snacks.
I've always wondered if anyone has a picture of that
little store; would be great to see it posted.

By Donna (Donna) on Tuesday, January 6, 2026 - 11:11 am:

That is so interesting. He worked a whole lot too!!
And I bet he loved working at his little candy
store!

Thanks for that scoop!

I love these. I saw them on Facebook and thought
they were fabulous and so different.
