With such a crazy start to winter over the Thanksgiving Holiday, our Pasty Cam this week is filled with how folks coped with the blizzard conditions and waking up to no power, as in Beth Jukuri’s first photo with a candle burning and a battery operated Snowman. Her next two shots are on the Lower Pike road, it looked like that day wasn’t going to be their day for restored power yet. The fourth photo is the spring by their house, which Beth said they were quite thankful for as the power outage continued. For those of you that have city water, you might not realize that us folks that live in the country and have a well for our water, need power to run the pump that gets the water from the well into our homes, so no power, means no water, which also means you can’t flush the toilet, in case you didn’t think of that either. Ha, ha…
Beth’s last photo she self titled: “Let there be lights!” The power came back on for them 40 plus hours later and you can see their kerosene lamps that lit the evenings for them during the power outage alongside the electric lamp.. the old way and the new way, side-by-side.
Alexis Dahl is here today with a video titled: “They Filled Half the Lake with Mine Waste – But There’s Hope” She’s referring to Torch Lake in the Lake Linden area. The lead-in says: “In the 1970s, Michigan's Torch Lake was so polluted, the fish were growing tumors. 50 years of clean-up later, parts of this area are still on the Superfund list. So, what will it take to restore Torch Lake — and can we? Special thanks to Michigan Tech for supporting this project!”

I remember living in the country in Minnesota. We
always had 5 gallon buckets of water in the
basement in case the power went out because of the
toilet. It's quite inconvenient to say the least.
That storm caused so much trouble for folks. I'm
happy everybody got through. Hats off to our first
responders and all who were out trying to restore
power to all who were without.
