We’ve seen photos of hardy souls, surfing the Lake Superior waves before, but today’s photos from Shannon over at 906 Images are of Olympic snowboarding Gold Medalist, Nick Baumgartner, surfing some Lake Superior waves in Marquette. For those who aren’t familiar with Nick, he’s from Iron River, MI, where he wrestled and played football for West Iron County Schools. Nick is no stranger to cold, winter weather, so surfing on Lake Superior this time of year is good training to keep his snowboarding skills fresh for the Winter Olympics in Milan this coming year. Big difference in surfing and snowboarding is Nick is in a dry suit on Lake Superior, instead of a snow suit on the winter snowboarding hills. Wishing Nick, our U.P. hometown boy, good luck for those February 2026 Winter Olympic events.

Today’s video is also from Shannon, recorded at his favorite place to watch Lake Superior waves in the Marquette area. It was a good day for November wave-watching, as there were some good size ones rollin' in!
