Happy Veteran’s Day! I always like to post this refresher for folks, in case you aren’t sure what Veteran’s Day is all about: Veteran’s Day always falls on November 11th, celebrating the end of World War I fighting at 11:00 a.m., November 11, 1918 – The 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month. It is the day we nationally honor our military veterans who have served in the U.S. Armed Forces in all wars.

We honor and thank our Veteran’s today with a photo from Donna MacIntosh of the flag flying over the Court House in Houghton. Fly your flag proudly in honor of those who served our country.

The next three photos are from the Lake Linden-Hubbell Lakes Football games recently. The first one is our local Lake Linden American Legion Color Guard who still serve in many ways, one is at all the home football games, taking the field before the game with our U.S. flag, their Legion Flag, the POW Flag and the Michigan flag. Thank you for your service and for serving our community still.

The bottom two photos were snapped by Megan Gervais during the National Anthem, with our Lake Linden-Hubbell Varsity football team, coaches and young managers, showing their respect for our Flag and our Veterans.

Today’s video was originally shared on Upper Michigan’s Source/TV6 FOX UP back in April, before the All Women Veterans of the UP Honor Flight Mission 26 flew out of Escanaba to Washington D.C. this past May. It was not the first all women honor flight, but it was the largest to date. The schedule for the women vets allowed them more time during the stop at the Military Women’s Memorial in D.C., also.

To all our Veterans....thank you for your service
and God Bless all...from those who have given the
Ultimate Sacrifice to all those currently serving.

In Flanders Fields
By John McCrae

In Flanders fields the poppies blow
Between the crosses, row on row,
That mark our place; and in the sky
The larks, still bravely singing, fly
Scarce heard amid the guns below.

We are the Dead. Short days ago
We lived, felt dawn, saw sunset glow,
Loved and were loved, and now we lie,
In Flanders fields.

Take up our quarrel with the foe:
To you from failing hands we throw
The torch; be yours to hold it high.
If ye break faith with us who die
We shall not sleep, though poppies grow
In Flanders fields.

Thank you veterans for everything you've done to
keep us free. We respect you more than you could
ever know.

My Dad received the Purple Heart and the Bronze Star and served in WW2 and Korea. Whenever I asked him what he did in the war, all he would say is "I stayed alive".

Respect and honor to all who served.

Years after my Dad passed, his older brother at his 80th birthday party, told me a few "secret" stories about my Dad.

Supposedly, a portion of his platoon became surrounded by Germans. They hid out in a building, laying on the floor. When the Germans started shooting through the walls, the platoon officer decided to surrender and started to stand up. The story goes that my Dad punched him out and they all survived. The officer wanted to have my Dad put in for a Court Martial. Instead they promoted him. Very unusual I think.

That's just awesome, D.A. How proud you must be of
him.

Great set of pix and
video!
Many thanks to those

allow us to enjoy the
freedoms that we have.
