Between Eagle Harbor and Copper Harbor, in the waters of Lake Superior, is a natural arch in the conglomerate rock. Quite the geological phenomenon, a product of years and years of weathering and erosion is my uneducated guess. However it was formed, it’s pretty neat and huge when you see Stacey Flood’s husband Jim underneath the arch with his paddle and arms extended, just barely reaching the arc of the arch like that. Stacey said this rock formation is located behind Arch Island and cannot be seen from the shore, so once again, it is someplace that we’ll just have to enjoy in photos, unless you know how to get there in a kayak. We’re lucky to have folks like Stacey who like to adventure out and find out of the way places to share.

If you know anything about Lake Superior, you know that it is an amazing Lake. Spotlight Features gives us a look at why this Great Lake is Amazing. The lead-in to the video says: “Lake Superior is one of the world's largest freshwater lakes. The facts and history tell it's a fantastic ongoing story. From its enormous size to its incredible depth, the Lake is truly Superior. What is your favorite fact or story about Lake Superior?” Interesting question... I guess my favorite story is, growing UP here in the Copper Country with Lake Superior in our ‘backyard’, I was used to the size of this Lake and not being able to see land on the other side of where I was standing, so when I went to the East Coast for the first time and saw the Atlantic Ocean, it really didn’t impress me much, because it didn’t look that much different than the vastness of Lake Superior to me. Feel free to share your favorite fact or story, too.

That is so cool. I've never heard of that. Thank
you Stacey for bringing it to us. And the water
looks amazing both behind and in front of Jim.

WOW...I've never heard of that either. How
amazing...Indeed...thank you for spotlighting that.
Awesome stuff! Interesting info on the Big Lake!

Really beautiful pics and an interesting video.
I'll be looking at this a few times today. I knew
the lake was 222 fathoms or 1333' deep just
outside of Munising. Plenty of interesting facts.

As far as the "Arch" goes... it's probably been
there awhile... wink wink, but if I were to go
underneath it... yep... it'd drop into the water
on me for sure. Kinda like Pictured Rocks and the
recent one when the dude was screaming, "back up,
back up" when the wave was advancing towards them
in the boat. lol

Mary, having been around the big lake my whole life,
I felt the same as you when seeing the Ocean and I
also remember thinking.... no salt/no sharks, I'll
take Superior all day long!! lol

I love the ocean, especially in the Caribbean
waters (maybe not this week). It's much warmer but
I love our beautiful Lake Superior as well.

Very cool set!!!
I’m not claustrophobic,
but I’d be thinking
about that arch
collapsing when I
was underneath it.
Interesting and
informative video.
Thanks for this cool
set, Mary!

Hi
My first thought about the Arch is whether it
disappears wholy or partly when the lake level is
higher.

As a kid, I was used to swimming in Lake Huron. In
general, you can get enough used to the
temperature that swimming is pleasant. When my
family went camping at Porcupine Mountains State
Park, I found that was not the case with Lake
Superior. I could stand in the shallows quite a
while but my feet never thawed. My work-around
involved some sun-warmed rocks extending out into
the Lake. My brother & I went out on the rocks to
swimming depth. Then we jumped off, swam around
frantically for a few minutes and then climbed out
and spread our chilly bodies on the nice warm
rocks.

I didn't like swimming in the ocean because of the
salt in my nose & mouth, and on my skin when I
finished.
