A great place to take a short hike is the Calumet Lions Park, around Calumet Lake. Debbie Jarve did so recently and captured this photo of a Great Blue Heron taking off in flight. Such a graceful looking bird and look at the wing span on it... quite amazing! She also captured a shot of one of the Trumpeter Swans, with some fall color reflecting in the lake, along with a glimpse of the trail of leaves there, too. Debbie’s remaining photos are some of the fall mushrooms she spotted while hiking the trails. I used Google Image to try to identify them, so I’m not sure if the names with the photos are correct, if you can help with their identification, please do so, especially the bottom photo... I couldn’t come up with anything for certain on that one.

Another Crossing Place video today, from Visit Keweenaw. They sure do a wonderful job with the videos they make and produce highlighting the Keweenaw area and the folks that live and work here. The lead-in to the video says: “Tucked deep in the Keweenaw woods, the Open Skies Project, a former Calumet Air Force Station, surprises first-time visitors with its scale—massive radar domes, Cold War history, and a hidden, open space in the forest. From the mountaintop, enjoy sweeping all-season views of Keweenaw forests, freshwater lakes, Mount Bohemia, and even distant Isle Royale. In fall, the landscape comes alive with crimson and gold, while every season offers its own unique beauty. Explore this hidden landmark where history meets the vast Keweenaw skies.” You can find a bit more information about the “Open Skies Project” here: Explore the Keweenaw Open Skies Project

How beautiful...

Are the shrooms edible I wonder...the dude in some
of those Discovery episodes would have fun there!

Cindy Lou's bro was home on vaca for a bit, and
they took the tour at the old air base. She said it
was phenomenal and the view from the top was so
amazing...I bet today would be nuts!

These Crossing Place videos are excellent. I’ve spent a lot of time at Mt Horace Greeley (MHG). We started the main distribution hub for PastyNET wireless Internet service on top of the tallest radar building in 2004, and it has grown ever since. Fiber at the base of our tower behind The Hut Inn in Calumet is beamed up to MHG and Mt. Bohemia. From MHG the bandwidth shoots on up to Copper Harbor and Brockway Mountain. From Brockway it beams back to Eagle Harbor and on to Eagle River and out Five Mile Point Road. So Mt Horace Greeley has handed off most of Keweenaw County’s Internet traffic for over 20 years. A fascinating place, great video today.
