Six of our Lake Linden American Legion Auxiliary-Unit 90 ladies had a special opportunity to ride a bus chartered by Koppers in Hubbell recently, to welcome home the U.P. Honor Flight Veterans at the Delta County Airport. Koppers chartered the bus from Houghton to Escanaba and back, for their employees to go and welcome our U.P. Veterans from their flight to Washington D.C. to visit the memorials that stand in their honor there. Extra seats were available on the bus, so the Auxiliary ladies were invited along... Thank you, Koppers for this opportunity.
It’s an emotional time for the Veterans and for those of us that are waiting to welcome them home and say thank you for their service. Families with posters welcoming their veterans, the Nurses Honor Guard, other Veterans, numerous Veteran organizations, just to name a few, along with a Community Band playing the various military branch songs are among those that come to the airport to welcome the Veterans home, waving flags, cheering and shouting thank you for your service.
The U.P. Honor Flight is a 100% volunteer organization that raises money to fulfill this mission: Our mission is to fly Upper Peninsula Veterans who served from 1941 to May of 1975 to see the Memorials that stand in their honor. This “Tour of Honor” is FREE to the veteran. Airfare, meals, deluxe tour bus, t-shirt and other items are provided at NO COST to the veteran.” If you’d like to help out, donations can be sent to: UP Honor Flight – 7508 J Road – Gladstone, MI 49837. More photos and information can also be found on their Facebook page here: Upper Peninsula Honor Flight. You can find the Veteran application and the Guardian application on their website here: Applications
Upper Michigan’s Source – TV6 & Fox UP had a segment about the Honor Flight, with TV6 Anchor Brady Meyer who was able to join the Veterans on Mission XXVII, showcasing what he learned on the U.P. Honor Flight trip.
