Recently, Laurie Bashaw and her husband, Ed took a ride to the Stonington Peninsula in Delta County, to see the Monarch Butterfly migration. Laurie said it was so very cool and even thought they were a little late, they still saw quite a few. These butterflies migrate every year between August and October and the Stonington Peninsula is a critical stopover for them, as it juts out into Lake Michigan, so it’s an easy spot for the butterflies to stop and rest as they prepare to cross the lake, before continuing on their journey to their wintering grounds in Mexico. That’s quite a journey something so small and delicate looking.

Today’s video from Nature on PBS highlights the breathtaking Monarch Butterfly Swarm in the mountains of Mexico, using a “mechanical spy” hummingbird to venture into the heart of the swarms. So very interesting!

Hi
If you think about it, it's incredible that
something as small and delicate as a butterfly
migrates long distances. And the video was amazing.
It took a minute to understand that the huge grayish
clumps on the trees were butterflies with their
wings folded. Then they began flying.

Naure had a whole series on getting close-ups of
wildlife via disguised cameras: "Spy in the Wild",
they called it.

Amazing stuff!
And the technology
to capture those scenes
in the video was even
more amazing.
Good stuff, indeed!

Butterflies are wonderful creatures. I
love watching then move around the
garden. Nature is wonderful.

Wow. How stunning is this? AMAZING!

Just imagine walking in those woods, when the
butterflies wake up and start flying...I died and
went to Heaven!
