We continue hiking with Laurie Bashaw... we left off at Bald Mountain in Ironwood County on Saturday and we take up again on the trails where Laurie and Edward saw a sign for Superior Falls. It’s behind a hydro electric building on the Montreal River and of course these avid hikers had to check it out. Laurie said the gorge walls are really something to see and the Falls are quite pretty, too. All in all it was a beautiful day, exploring where they hadn’t been before. I have to say, I’d never seen these locations, either, so thanks for taking us along!

Superior Falls is on the Montreal River and just a couple hundred yards from Lake Superior. It has several drops and quite dramatic gorge walls. When you get to the parking lot, you’ll notice a sign that says, “Superior Falls”, then go to the left of the parking lot and you’ll see the falls 65 foot drop.

Next we check out Discovering, Episode #147, in which Kristin Ojaniemi interviews Richard P. Smith, the first Yooper to be inducted into the Outdoor Hall of Fame. She then rides along exploring the Western U.P. in an electric ORV, with Hamilton’s North Coast Adventures, on the world’s first and only electrified trail system which is located in Ontonagon County.

I haven't even heard of this. Nice
pictures.

Looks like another nice
hike.
The one pic that caught
my attention was the
“No Trespassing Stairway”
pic. Unless maybe there’s
a pub at the top???

I'm with Alex....What's up at the top of the
stairway? At times, it's a good thing to be
unhealthy, otherwise, you'd be illegal. I know I
would. lol

GREAT Discovering episode. That Richard P. Smith
would be an interesting fella to break bread with!!
THAT's who needs to be on the State's DNR panel for
the Upper Peninsula.

When we reflect on the labor required for our life,
reverence naturally wells up within us.

ANOTHER Montreal River in the UP!?
Well, OK HALF of THIS Montreal River is in MI and is pretty much the MI/WI state line. That is until you're about 8 miles south of Ironwood where the state line makes a straight bee line towards Land O'Lakes, leaving the river to meander from WI.

Almost certain that stairway is used for maintenance and belongs to Xcel Energy, who is the owner/operator of a hydroelectric dam just 400 yards above the main falls. There's also a water exit duct from the generator station nearby the bottom of the falls.

Late last week, I returned home from my UP & Isle Royale jaunt. I've been busy recovering (my vacations always seem to need a vacation) and going through the hundreds of pics I took to see if there's anything Mary might be interested in.

Northern Lights tonight? I hope so, but I think it might be a bit over-hyped as it's only a G2 flare. The regular, non-space weather forecast for tonight in the Keweenaw & northern Lake Superior calls for 20% to 30% cloud cover.
