We pick back up with our vacationers, Cindy Conway & Michael Donnelly from earlier this week. Their next destination was the Powerhouse Falls on the Falls River, about a mile past L’Anse on the Power Dam Road. Cindy explains what an interesting set of falls it was to explore: “You can see the main falls next to the old Powerhouse (hydraulic) from the parking lot and there are some nice rapids visible just downstream. If you walk up the hill to the left of the building and boilers, you get a nice side view from above the falls. There are even more drops above that, upstream a bit.” The bottom photo is a peek inside the old ruins of the Powerhouse building there by the main falls. Be sure to tune in next week to see where Cindy and Michael take us on a few more Keweenaw adventures.

In the meantime, let’s take a train ride with the Restless Viking as they take us on a journey with a connection to the past, now the only High-Speed Rail Line in the Midwest... a ride on the rail line that built the Midwest. They step aboard in Kalamazoo and travel the Detroit to Chicago line, where they then stay at the Drake Hotel. If like me, you’ve always been fascinated with traveling on a train, then hop aboard with Chuck and Poppins as they explore part of the rail line, its history and its future. This just may be the next best thing to being there.

Laurium Manor Inn is in the running (again!) for Newsweek’s Best Historical B&B, and this time, they’re aiming for the top spot. If you’d like to help achieve that honor, you can cast your vote by clicking here: Newsweek’s Best Historical B&B, then click the black button that says: “Vote for the best historical B&B!”. That will take you to a pop-up window with the list... scroll down to “G. Laurium Manor Inn – Laurium, MI”, click on it, then scroll down and click the “Submit” button. The contest runs until August 14th at Noon ET, so we’ll have a reminder here each day if you’d like to vote. Thanks in advance.

Nice set!
The Detroit to Chicago
line ran a half mile from
my house in Detroit
and when came by
at night with the
windows open, it
sounded like it was
coming down the
street. It was that loud.

Vote cast!! I missed the
black button yesterday.
Dah!

Hi
There sure are a lot of waterfalls in the UP, most
of which I haven't visited.

The train trip looked interesting. Another
advantage of train travel is that you don't have
to find (& pay for) parking once you get to a
large city. That was part of why I took a train
from Windsor to Toronto instead of driving.

My impression is that the Restless Viking &
Poppins would've enjoyed beer & hot wings more
than tea and cakes. But it can be fun to try
something new.
