After being laid up, due to an injury, Cindy Conway is “back in the saddle” again, vacationing around the U.P., along with her traveling partner, Michael Donnelly. They started off their travels in the Marquette area along the Iron Ore Heritage Trail and a stop at the beautifully restored Charcoal Kiln at the Carp River. Cindy told me that this is the site of the old Carp River Furnace Complex from 1875 to 1902. She said it was a hazy, very warm day, and that Lake Superior was so calm, with just a few ripples.

From there, the pair headed west from Marquette toward L’Anse. They made a stop at the Tioga Falls Roadside Park on US 41 to stretch their legs. A walk over the bridge gave them the lovely view of Tioga Creek Rapids and the Tioga Park Falls. If you have never stopped at this little roadside park, it’s really worth your time to take a break there. It’s a short walk from the parking area to the falls.

We were just at Fayette State Park with Fritz, the Wonder Dog last week. We revisit today with Alexis Dahl and the information she gathered about the Scraggly Trees there on the Cliffs at Fayette, some that are 1000+ years old. The lead-in to her video says: “There are dozens of scraggly, unassuming cedars growing out of these cliffs. The oldest one sprouted more than 1440 years ago. Here's how they're still alive.”

Laurium Manor Inn is in the running (again!) for Newsweek’s Best Historical B&B, and this time, they’re aiming for the top spot. If you’d like to help achieve that honor, you can cast your vote by clicking here: Newsweek’s Best Historical B&B, then click the black button that says: “Vote for the best historical B&B!”. That will take you to a pop-up window with the list... scroll down to “G. Laurium Manor Inn – Laurium, MI”, click on it, then scroll down and click the “Submit” button. The contest runs until August 14th at Noon ET, so we’ll have a reminder here each day if you’d like to vote. Thanks in advance.

Nice pictures. I love that little
roadside park. It's such a peaceful
little stop. You can just feel the
stress leaving your body as you sit
there watching the world go by. Just
one of many beautiful stops in the UP.

Cool pics...awesome vid! Imagine what those trees
have seen!

Wouldn't let me vote. Said I did already??

Hi
It's nice that Cindy & Michael are out riding around
enjoying the summer. As I've gotten older, I no
longer take that sort of thing for granted.

With regard to the white cedars at Fayette, they
don't have to worry abour deer browsing them...or
loggers, either.

Beautiful pics, Alexis... you are amazing, with your
story telling and demeanor!! Always interesting to!!

It would not let me vote today either!! Rigged
against the Yoop!! lol

Who knew? For both the Tioga Falls and the 1000
year old Ceder trees.

How did I miss that roadside park all these years?
How did I not notice the old Ceders when I visited Fayette?

I voted OK. Try again tomorrow Donna.

My UP plans have changed. Now I am going to Isle Royale for 3 days, during the 3rd full week in August. Upon return it's 4 days in the Houghton area.
Goodness! Motels rates have skyrocketed.

I see the Houghton air quality is in the danger zone (114) today. I hope no one is too severely affected and I hope the wind shifts.
