We have a collection of deer photos today from a variety of photographers. The first two photos come to us from Linda Griffin who snapped this young buck, with velvet antlers. That they are growing this time of year. The velvet is actually a living tissue with blood vessels and nerves that nourish the growing bone. They will later “shed” the velvet when the antlers reach full size.

The third photo was taken by Sally Beaudette. She spotted this young buck as she was leaving her driveway in Bootjack and had to stop for a quick picture as he was checking her out, too.

The fourth shot was snapped by Joy Ziemnick who titled it: “Mama lessons: Look both ways before you cross the street!” I sure hope that spotted little one learns that lesson well.

Last, but not least, Jean Dessellier captured triplet fawns that have been around her home in Traprock Valley. Hopefully these three learn to be careful by the busy road, too, so they can come and visit Jean’s back yard for years to come.

We sure are lucky that Visit Keweenaw shares so many videos highlighting different things of interest in our area. Today we have one from Nathan “Invincible” Miller as he talks about paddling the gentle Sturgeon Sloughs. He says: “Water like glass. Birds singing. Paddle PERFECT! The Surgeon Sloughs have calm waters and lush shorelines that invite peaceful exploration. This serene spot is your perfect escape!”

Laurium Manor Inn is in the running (again!) for Newsweek’s Best Historical B&B, and this time, they’re aiming for the top spot. If you’d like to help achieve that honor, you can cast your vote by clicking here: Newsweek’s Best Historical B&B, then click the black button that says: “Vote for the best historical B&B!”. That will take you to a pop-up window with the list...scroll down to “G. Laurium Manor Inn – Laurium, MI”, click on it, then scroll down and click the “Submit” button. The contest runs until August 14th at Noon ET, so we’ll have a reminder here each day if you’d like to vote. Thanks in advance.

YEEHAW!! I have been begging lil sis to send in
photos for YEARS....and now they appear. WTG!

These are all such beautiful pics. Deer are
gorgeous creatures. That velvet is pretty...so are
the fawns. When I lived in one place in Baraga, I
was up behind the State Park, and a Mama and 3
babes were walking on the train tracks below...and
I slid open the sliding glass door...threw out
some grapes and the babes came up, without Mom
knowing. lol...they munched away (this was before
digital cams) and a bit later Mom found them. She
was not happy...stomping, snorting, etc...the
littles finished the grapes tho.

Cool Vid...I know folks that did the Sturgeon in
the Spring. They would not say it was a calm ride.
Cracks me up...every time I think of that story.

And thank you for the voting reminder....

Great pics, the fifth one is my favorite. Also, very
nice video too. Did you happen to notice that 12'
gator 39 seconds into the video? YIKES!!

I voted for the Laurium Manor!!
