Laurie Bashaw was pretty excited recently when she heard a different sort of bird call near her Ishpeming home. She had installed a bird ID app on her phone, so she used it to see if it would identify this bird sound correctly. When the app said Barred Owl, Laurie said she was skeptical, so she walked into the woods and there was an owl on the ground, no more than 20 feet from her. She said it flew into a tree and there were two more! Pretty cool, since usually owls are nocturnal, so seeing them and getting photos of them in the daytime is really exciting. Laurie figures her bottom photo is the baby Barred Owl, since it’s fluffier looking. It was the baby’s screech she heard and identified with the app.

The baby’s call can be heard on today’s video from Melissa Mancuso, as it calls to its parents. That is probably what the baby owl in Laurie’s woods was doing, too!

Nice owl pictures. The adult Barred Owl has a series
of hoots that sound like "Who cooks for you? Who
coks for you all?"

Go to the Pow Wow...it's one of the most
spectacular things you will ever see!~

And the Fry Bread is sooooooooooooo good....

Lots of Vendors...Music, clothes, jewelry, books,
beading supplies, food, etc...I used to save all
my change all year, cash it in, and shop at the
Pow Wow!

Make sure you hit a Grand Entry. The men will
bring in the "Colors" (all Native and USA/Military
flags), then the men, the women and the children.
All in their regalia...it is simply a beautiful,
beautiful time!

Grand Entries:

Friday at 7pm
Saturday at 1 and 7pm
Sunday at 1pm.

One year I went in, and there was a sign saying
"You are now entering Sacred Ground" and there was
no sign on the way out....so I'm counting it as
EVERYWHERE is Sacred Ground!

I wish I could still ride.
I’d head up to that event,
check in at the Baraga
Lakeside Inn and enjoy
the Pow Wow and cruising
the UP. Ain’t nothing better.
