Melanie Hakala Rossi and friends recently hiked to the Montreal Falls in the Keweenaw to take in the beauty of this spot and the rushing water as it meets and joins Lake Superior. The Smith Fisheries road is no longer able to be used to get there, instead you make your way out to Fish Cove on a two-track road, so a high clearance vehicle is needed to get there. From there you can hike along the shoreline of Lake Superior about a mile to the Falls area. The trail is foot-worn, but not maintained, so be prepared for rocks and roots along the way. It’s not an easy, quick hike, but you can see from Melanie’s photos that it’s worth the hike if you’re up to it. For more info and directions, click here: Montreal Falls Guide

Visit Keweenaw and Nathan take us on a day trip to Bond Falls and Agate Falls to discover cool cascades that don’t hold back, even in the summer. Both of these are family-friendly hikes with a splash of adventure! Big waterfall action at these two U.P. falls.

These look a lot like Marcy's photos
from last year. They made me want to
take this hike and so do these ones.
But there'll be no hiking for me in
surfaces like that this year. Good for
Melanie for braving it. These pictures
are great. Thanks for sharing them.

Hi
It looks like an interesting place to visit, though
it'll have to be vicariously. My car couldn't manage
the road in.

Is it called Fish Cove because the fishing is good?
I once took a hike along the lakeshore to the
Mosquito River, which is in the Pictured Rocks
National Lakeshore. The mosquitos weren't really
evident, at least not at the river mouth.

As soon as I saw the 3rd and 5th pics I said to myself, "How did they get across the river?"

Is the Smith's Fishery road closure permanent or temporary?

I've never made it to the mouth of the river except by boat. Maybe someday but I doubt it.

When I was 20 something, one weekend a LONG time ago, I hitchhiked to Copper Harbor. Then backpacked to High Rock Bay. I tent camped there one night. I discovered the concrete slabs at High Rock Bay before anyone had documented them and added a monument. I remember thinking to myself that it looked like a rocket launch pad, but how could that be? I then found my way to Keystone Bay for the 2nd night. Camped on the very beautiful sand beach. After walking back to Copper Harbor it took a bit of finagling to get a ride back to Houghton.

I didn't see a soul all weekend. Such fond memories!

I just made final arrangements to spend 4 nights in Houghton, the first week in August. Looking forward to some Lake Trout and an Ambassador pizza.

It will be nice to be "home" again, at least for awhile.
