Chris Hendra over at Chris Hendra Photography has some stunning shots of bugs. He uses a Macro lens to get up close and personal with these various bugs, starting with the mosquito in the first photo. Here’s what Chris said about this shot: “I wanted to get a photo of a female mosquito with a full tank. It wasn't hard to coax one to land on my index finger. I wasn't expecting the droplet though, I never knew they did that. Here's what I could find online. ‘Excretion of blood and urine may prevent overheating by reducing body temperature through evaporative cooling (akin to perspiration). Excretion of blood and urine also concentrates the ingested blood’.” How’s that for learning something new today?
The next photo is a fly, similar in size to a house fly, Chris said, but a little longer. He added that this is what they look like up close. Not pretty like the birds he usually photographs, but he finds it interesting. I have to admit, even though I’m not fond of bugs, especially the biting kind, I find these close-ups interesting, too.
The third shot is a bee inside a dandelion. The detail is quite amazing, along with the color so vibrant. You can even see the flecks of pollen on its back and the swirls inside the dandelion.
I figured I’d round out the bug photos with a pretty bird... Chris’ bottom photo is a Chestnut-sided Warbler. Such beautiful markings on this little bird. I looked it up online and found that it is a New World Warbler and that they breed in eastern North America and southern Canada, as well as the Great Lakes region and in the eastern United States. If you’d like to see it in action and hear it sing, click here for a YouTube look: Chestnut-sided Warbler
Today’s video is a fun one from WGN News featuring Comedy Wildlife Co-Founder Tom Sullam, sharing some of the winners of the Comedy Wildlife Photography Awards in 2024. Enjoy the antics captured in the photos.
