Copper Harbor decided to do something different this year to celebrate the 4th of July. They held a Drone Light Show in place of their traditional fireworks show, citing several reasons for the change, including it being better for the environment (no pollution from various chemicals found in fireworks), a lack of volunteers to light the fireworks display, fire safety, kinder to humans and animals who are affected by the noise, including Loons that reside in the Harbor to name a few. Some folks loved the Drone Light Show, others said they preferred the traditional fireworks. We have an assortment of photos from Larry Molloy who enjoyed the 11 minute drone show, saying he had his doubts, but when it was all said and done, he said it was amazing! Pretty neat, especially since so many other communities in the Keweenaw still have traditional fireworks for folks to enjoy.

The video to accompany today’s photos, comes to us from Sue Vernier. She actually recorded two videos and said this one posted here is her favorite. If you’d like to see her second video, which has some different displays than the photos above, click here: Copper Harbor Drone Light Show #2

That is an amazing set!
They had a drone light
show at the Detroit
waterfront a few weeks
ago and it received the
same excited response
from the crowd.
***A new art form has
emerged.***
I just wonder
how long it will take
before they start to
show advertisements
and commercials.
Mark my word, it’s
coming.

These are so amazing. But I still love
fireworks.

That was simply stunning, and more towns need to
do it. It drove me insane to be at the fireworks,
and (I'm gonna say it), too many idiots bring
their dogs....who get so freaked out. It's just
awful...WHY do people think a dog is gonna like
that? Also, our Veterans don't need reminders of
explosions. I know someone that saw a CH fireworks
show from Brockway. There was a little kid that
had been in a war zone, who really freaked
out....she grabbed him and held him hard through
that. No...we got the abilities now to do drones
and they are a much friendlier version. (Sorry
Deb!) It's time.

And I LOVE how they reflected off the water!

By David S. (Yooperdfs) on Tuesday, July 15, 2025 - 11:40 am:

Yes, amazing but no doubt eventually it will be
decreed that the bright lights are upsetting the
fish and their feeding and breeding cycles (fish
unfriendly)

By Deb S. (Usedtobeayooper) on Tuesday, July 15, 2025 - 01:19 pm:

I agree with what you said, Donna.
There are people (and dogs) who
shouldn't be there. I will always
enjoy fireworks. But I haven't been in
a way zone. Those people should
definitely stay away from them. And
I'm clueless why people bring their
dogs, though the explosion doesn't
bother our puppy. We didn't bring her,
of course, but when we took her out to
potty during them at home here, she
wasn't bothered. We live close to the
fireworks and can hear them as if we
were there. But I know that's rare.
They do bother most animals and their
families should know that.

By Alex - UP-Goldwinger (Alex) on Tuesday, July 15, 2025 - 03:01 pm:

I’ll bet that someday
there will be a loud
speaker set up to
synchronize with the
light show.
Then the dogs
will be howling like
crazy, rabid wolves.
