We have a collection of interesting photos from around the U.P., starting with a menacing looking storm front in Escanaba, snapped by Dominique Bougie. This photo came in a round-about way, sent by Madison Scheriff to her Aunt, Donna MacIntosh, who sent it to me. Madison said she watched this storm front pass slowly overhead. I’m guessing there must have been a big downpour sometime afterwards.
The second photo is the moon over Isle Royale. Donna MacIntosh shares this one from the Mott Island Southwest webcam, after cleaning it up a bit to remove lines from the camera. If that isn’t the picture of peace and quiet, I don’t know what is.
The bottom two photos I snapped during my walk last week when this helicopter and contraption below it, flew over. I did a bit of digging and found out it is part of a USGS Low-Level Helicopter Geological survey that is studying the subsurface geology, part of a national effort to map critical mineral resources needed to drive the U.S. economy and national security by searching below ground and in tailings from old mines. So interesting...

Omgosh, that wall cloud is so scary. That's a tornado cloud if ever I did see one. And I did see a wall cloud like this one time in Minnesota, during a tornado warning. I wanted to watch it, but was too chicken so I stayed in my basement, after getting pictures, of course. And that moon is gorgeous! Thank you, Donna, for sharing these.
Mary, that must have been so interesting to see this on your walk. Good you investigated to be sure it wasn't invaders from Mars.

That Storm Cloud is so wild. Wow, Wow, Wow...That would have me running..if I could. I do love that moon pic on Isle Royale. I check the webcams out there all the time. There's also the cutest sled dog pups in Denali Nat'l Park, that I also peek at and of course, the Tech webcams..then you get on You Tube and there are live cams all over the world. That's my exciting life.
And Mary, how cool to see that contraption...I hope they post something, somewhere to tell us what they are finding!

Hi Lots going on the skies of the UP. I agree, Mary, that the Isle Royale photo is serenity itself.

The cloud is actually a shelf cloud at the leading edge of a thunderstorm. They are not typically associated with a tornado. Wall clouds tend to form at the back end of a thunderstorm and look differently. If you search youtube there are many videos explaining the differences.

Iron Range Dave, excellent and accurate description of the shelf cloud. Where I live in Iowa they are almost a weekly event!

Donna and Everyone,
I do not believe that Isle Royale web camera, they call Mott SW, is linked on the park's website. Here is a link to Mott SW Webcam.
And this is how the sunset looked on April 18, 2025
Nice cloud.
