We have a sort of menagerie here on the Pasty Cam today, a Mama bear, 3 cubs and a moose! We start off with the bear family, captured by Jeff Dennis, just outside of Lake Linden. Looks like they got into some trouble dragging someone’s garbage cans out into the road, looking for some dinner I guess. We don’t get to see Fritz today, but when you watch the video Jeff recorded of the bear family crossing the road, you’ll hear him whining a bit in the background, as he probably would have liked to get out there and play with those cute little cubs. I’m sure Mama wouldn’t have liked that though, so good thing he was safe in the car with Jeff.

The bottom two photos were snapped by Debbie Jarve, just before Alberta. She said this big moose on the loose was HUGE! Until you’re close to one, you don’t realize how big they really are. Tall and solid, this one is probably almost as big as Debbie’s vehicle, as a full grown bull moose can stand up to 7 feet tall and weigh anywhere from 1,200 to 1,600 pounds. Yikes!

Moose always look like they were built by a committee. Sorta of odd parts just stuck together. But it works!

Beautiful photos!

One of the biggest black bear I've ever seen crossed right in front of us just north of the airport along 41 a few years ago. As far as moose, Nat says they don't exist in the UP as she has never seen one. I have seen several, including a bull along 28/41 near Parent Lake once.

These are great! We haven't seen any
bears in our yard yet, but we know
they're there because the neighbor has
seen then. Some day. And the only
times I've seen moose was on our trip
to Yellowstone, and on I-29 on our way
back from Grand Forks.

The bears walking away look as though the garbage
rooting was a fail.

TRIPLETS!! How beautiful! And when I heard the vid,
I knew that was Fritz....GREAT stuff Jeff!

And I have seen Moose in the Keweenaw...and they
are huge, just majestic creatures!! So incredibly
massive.

I wonder how rare are triplets? I wonder if the more typical twins are usually identical or fraternal?

As far a moose sightings, I've ALWAYS had luck on the drive up US-141 from Crystal Falls to Covington, usually much closer to Covington.

I remember going to "The Dump" near Copper Harbor to join several others watching the black bears.

With approximately 750 wolves in the UP, how often are they sighted? How often are there (undesired) interactions?

By Kathyrn Laughlin (Kathyl) on Tuesday, June 3, 2025 - 05:33 pm:

Hi
I've never seen a moose in person. If I did, I'd
keep a respectful distance. Same with bears.
D.A., I also remember going to the dump at Copper
Harbor to watch bears. I also remember being
horrified, along with my friends & family, at how
close people--and their kids!--were getting. We're
not in a Disney cartoon, people.

D.A., I think wolves are a lot more shy around
people. For our sake & theirs, lets hope it stays
that way.

I used to love to go to the Copper
Harbor dump to watch for bears. Fun
times.

And Kathryn, you for sure have to keep
your distance from these predators.
You just never know.
