Nancy Haun shares some photos of the flood damage that happened in the L’Anse area a couple weeks back. The first photo is the East River Drive, along the Falls River in L’Anse. Nancy said a friend’s house, next to Secret Creek had a close call, but thankfully did not lose his house to the creek during the flooding.

The second photo was snapped from US 41 of the washout in the tracks there in L’Anse. The third photo is on the L’Anse Hill above the Ford Switch. You can see how it is washed out around the railroad ties, with some looking like they’re suspended in the air. The last photo showing a tangled mess with railroad ties missing.

This is just a small portion of the damage all around L’Anse and Baraga, caused by heavy rainfall. A number of roads are washed right out in various places. When we drove by Keweenaw Bay afterwards, the Bay water was brown colored from the flooding into Lake Superior there.

Nancy also recorded a video of the damage to the tracks, southbound from the Ford Switch on the L’Anse Hill. This was from mid-May and crews were in town right away. So hopefully by now, the tracks are repaired and the trains are running again.

What a devastating
set of pics!
This happened a few
weeks ago? I wonder
what it looks like now.
Perhaps Nancy, our
railroad reporter, can
give us an update. I’m
sure there has been
a lot of progress made
so the trains can get up
and running again.

And I’ll bet Nancy’s
friend had some nail
biting moments when
that was happening!!!
Thankfully they made
it okay.

What an awful mess. I saw the pictures
as it was happening and your heart
just went out to them. Thank you for
sharing these. And I'm with Alex,
updated photos would be great. I hope
nobody lost too much during this
devastating flood. And now we're
hoping for some rain.

Baraga got damaged too! One road I used to live on,
is "passable" and the last place was a dirt road
off Wadaga, which was damaged as well, and that
road goes to the prison.

Bless everyone in that neck of the woods...
