Osceola Mine #13 buildings are still standing there in Calumet, behind the Holiday Station on US41. Barbara Bouwkamp was out and about recently and stopped by there to snap a few photos to share with us all. The remains of the mining days dot the Keweenaw in various locations and thus remind us all of our heritage and how this area came to be, due to our ancestors coming to live here and make a living working underground in the mines. These old buildings still standing are a history lesson so we remember the hard work it took to earn a living back in those days.

We join Adventure #9 for a look at mining ruins near Torch Lake, in Hubbell/Tamarack, along with a few other points of interest they visited in today’s video.

USA Today is running a contest – 10 Best and Hunter’s Point in Copper Harbor is in the running for the Best Beach in Michigan. You can vote once per day until voting ends on Monday, May 19th at noon ET. The winners will be announced on Wednesday, May 28th. Click here to vote: Vote for Hunter’s Point

Boy that stuff IS everywhere. Imagine working back
in those conditions. Candles for light. Lunch
heated on your shovel. You come out so black and
filthy...imagine their lungs. I doubt many miners
lived long lives.

Very nice pictures. I know I probably
should be, growing up UP here, but
I've never had any interest in these
mines. But my hubby sure does. I am
however, interested in the stamp
mills. They're cool.

I distinctly remember the Osceola mine about 1965-
67. Specifically, I remember my Uncle Basil jumping
into the skip (mine car) and making the descent down
the mine shaft. What impressed me was the speed of
the cable going down and I thought, WOW that must be
deep. Yes, the miners back then were a brave and
hardy bunch, quite a contrast to things now.

A nice little piece of
history. Thanks for
sharing!
And I love seeing
those UP blue and
Cloudless skies once
again. Will be voting
after this post.
