There was some ice breaking and spring fishing going on in Munising Bay recently, and Kevin Dunham was in the right place, at the right time, to snag some neat shots of both. The U. S. Coast Guard Cutter Morro Bay (WTGB-106) was busy breaking up the ice in the Munising area, while two fisherman were successfully reeling in a fish, so Kevin got a double-header in the pictures that day. He said he doesn’t know who the fishermen are, but the ice breaker must have brought them good luck. Maybe the commotion in the water with the ice being broken up, startled the fish to head over to where the guys were fishing. Those are diehard fishermen, heading out in their boat with the ice still on Munising Bay. It kind of looks like they were doing a bit of ice breaking themselves, too!

Those guys must really be into fishing; it looks
cold. Maybe even colder than ice-fishing, because
they aren't in a shanty out of the wind with a space
heater. But I can relate; I've gone cross-country
skiing in poor conditions. Because doing it is
better than not doing it.

My husband loves to ice fish. Me, not
so much. You hear that crackling going
on while you're up there. Not for me.
These pictures are great! My husband
would love to be out there with them.

fishermen. Those are great pics. lol

They must love to fish. My first thought was the
way they are bundled up they need life jackets.
But thought again...with that water temperature
life jackets would not make any difference.

Regarding Life Jackets...
There's an old incident that occurred on the the Ranger III when a person kept talking during explanation the basic safety instructions with life jackets. When the person was challenged to be quiet they piped up and said, "The water is so cold if we're all in the water we will die before we can be rescued." The Ranger Mate quickly replied, "It makes the bodies a whole lot easier to find."

Ice fishing? Seems like every year (mostly on Lake Erie) several require rescue after their ice breaks away and floats into open water.

Maybe the ice fishermen should have taken their boat's outboard motor with them to move the iceberg.
